Disordered Carbon Shells Enable Shape Dependent Fluorescence Enhancement in Nanodiamond Quantum Sensors Revealed by Correlative TEM–Fluorescence Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Molten KNO2 treatment induces a lowrefractive index disordered carbon shell on fluorescent nanodiamonds, enhancing fluorescence emission while preserving spin coherence. Machine learningassisted correlative TEMPL enables direct single‐particle resolution of this enhancement relative to air‐oxidized nanodiamonds of similar morphology, establishing a ...

Trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of a current nonlinearity

open access: yes, 2017
We investigate the effect of a current nonlinearity on the evolution of a trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. We have implemented techniques from the field of nonlinear optics to provide new insights into the irregular dynamics associated with ...

Speckle‐Engineered Upconversion Amplification in Nanoemulsion‐Templated Hydrogel Microdomes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoemulsion‐confined PEGDA microdomes generate speckle‐like excitation fields that strongly amplify upconversion luminescence upon dehydration, enabling filter‐free visible readout with reversible on–off switching. DMD‐based lithography yields scalable, shape‐programmable arrays for moisture‐responsive displays and optical encryption.

Elucidating the Role of Surface Ligands on the Oxidative Etching of Au Bipyramids During Photothermia Using Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Gold bipyramids can act as efficient plasmonic nanoheaters, but they often reshape during laser heating. This study shows that oxygen nanobubbles drive oxidative etching and that surface ligands control stability. CTAB‐ and citrate‐coated particles blunt and lose optical performance, whereas polystyrene sulfonate preserves shape and heating by ...

On the Deterministic Prediction of Water Waves

open access: yesFluids, 2020
This paper discusses the potential of deterministic wave prediction as one basic module for decision support of offshore operations. Therefore, methods of different complexity—the linear wave solution, the non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLSE)

Irregular Wave Forces on a Large Vertical Circular Cylinder

open access: yes, 2016
Substructures of offshore wind turbines are exposed to irregular sea states that are generally defined using wave spectra. The waves undergo transformations due to non-linear wave-wave interactions and due to interaction with the structures they are ...

Irregular Wave Overtopping of Seawalls [PDF]

open access: yesOCEANS '86, 1986
This paper discusses recent laboratory tests of irregular wave overtopping of coastal structures being conducted at the Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC). Current model tests of seawalls has led to an improved method for predicting wave overtopping rates.

Design Strategies and Emerging Applications of High‐Performance Flexible Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors underpin wearable and soft electronics. This review links sensing physics, including contact resistance modulation, quantum tunneling and percolation, to unified materials/structure design. We highlight composite and graded architectures, interfacial/porous engineering, and microstructured 3D conductive networks
