Revisiting an old relationship: the causal associations of the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio with cardiometabolic diseases and relative risk factors—a mendelian randomization analysis

open access: yesCardiovascular Diabetology
Background It has been confirmed that the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio is closely associated with the incidence of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). However, due to uncontrolled confounding factors in observational studies, the causal relationship of this association ...

Early markers of angiogenesis and ischemia during bowel conduit neovascularization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background Bowel flaps are a good and reliable method to restore the continuity of the aerodigestive tract. Radiated fields, contaminated recipient sites, or depleted recipient vessels may increase the risk for ischemic injury after transfer.

Ischemia-Modified Albumin during Skeletal Muscle Ischemia [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Chemistry, 2004
Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) has been proposed as a biological marker of myocardial ischemia (1)(2). Exposure to ischemic myocardium modifies circulating albumin at its NH2 terminus by different mechanisms, and this modification is the basis of IMA measurement by the albumin cobalt binding (ACB) test (3).

Dietary nitrate and nitrite protect against doxorubicin‐induced cardiac fibrosis and oxidative protein damage in tumor‐bearing mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemotherapies such as doxorubicin can have toxic effects on healthy cardiovascular/heart tissue. Following up on a doxorubicin toxicity study in mice without tumors where nitrate water was cardioprotective (lessened toxicity), this study with tumor‐bearing mice undergoing doxorubicin treatment showed no negative effect of nitrate and nitrite on drug ...

Risk of End-Stage Kidney Disease and Topiramate Use

open access: yesKidney International Reports
Introduction: Topiramate is widely used for migraine prevention but has pleiotropic effects on renal sodium reabsorption and inflammation. Whether these effects could be associated with lower risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and cardiovascular ...

Diabetes‐induced vascular calcification is associated with low pyrophosphate and its oral supplementation prevents calcification in diabetic mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Induction of diabetes in three different mouse strains uniformly resulted in an increase in TNAP activity and a reduction in pyrophosphate (PPi) in the circulation. Inhibition of TNAP restored plasma PPi. Diabetes‐induced calcification in the media layer of the aorta was detected only in the Abcc6−/− strain, which is predisposed to ectopic ...

The effect of salubrinal on the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway in heat‐stressed spermatogonial cells in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigates the protective role of salubrinal against heat‐induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in mouse spermatogenic cells (GC1 and GC2). By modulating the ER stress pathway, salubrinal alleviates cellular stress and supports spermatogenic cell survival, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic candidate for heat‐related infertility.

The Impact of Tilburg Frailty on Poststroke Fatigue in First‐Ever Stroke Patients: A Cross‐Sectional Study With Unified Measurement Tools and Improved Statistics

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Poststroke fatigue (PSF) and frailty share substantial overlap in their manifestations, yet previous research has yielded conflicting results due to the use of heterogeneous frailty assessment tools. Objective To evaluate the independent impact of frailty on PSF using a unified measurement system (Tilburg Frailty Indicator, TFI ...

Association between triglyceride levels and hypertension in patients with coronary artery disease undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention: a retrospective cross-sectional study

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine
BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the association between serum triglyceride (TG) levels and the presence of hypertension in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and hypertension undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI ...
