3D Bioprinting of Functional Islets of Langerhans in an Alginate/Methylcellulose Hydrogel Blend
Advanced Healthcare Materials, 2019Transplantation of pancreatic islets is a promising strategy to alleviate the unstable blood‐glucose control that some patients with diabetes type 1 exhibit and has seen many advances over the years.

Langerhans islet preparation in cell transplantation
Transfusion Science, 1997Islet cell transplantation is potentially one of the best techniques for the almost perfect symptomatic treatment of Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Thanks to the considerable progress achieved in isolating and purifying human islet cells, highly encouraging results have recently been reported.

Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology & Diabetes, 2009
Since approximately 25 years islet transplantation as a mean for the treatment of diabetes has been developed from early attempts in rodents to first clinical applications in man in recent years. The review describes the results obtained in diabetic rats including metabolic effects as well as prevention of late complications.

Biological Sciences: Isolation of the Islets of Langerhans for Transplantation
Nature, 1973PANCREATIC transplantation with the aim of treating diabetes mellitus has so far met with little success. Of 23 patients thus treated and reported to the Transplant Registry in 19711, 15 died within 3 months and the longest survived one year. One of the major problems has been to overcome pancreatic exocrine digestion, and pancreatic duct ligation ...

[Islet of Langerhans transplantation].
Annales de chirurgie, 1996Islet of Langerhans transplantation is considered to be the ideal treatment for type I insulin-dependent diabetes. The permanent and adapted insulin secretion obtained by this method ensures prevention or even regression of the degenerative lesions which now constitute the severity of this frequent disease.

Prolonged survival of transplanted islets of Langerhans encapsulated in a biocompatible membrane
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Cell Research, 1984Prolonged survival of islet allografts in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats was achieved by encapsulating individual islets in protective, biocompatible alginate-polylysine-alginate membranes. A single intraperitoneal transplant of encapsulated islets reversed the diabetic state for up to 1 year.

We studied in vivo the effect of cyclosporine A (CsA) on both pancreatic islet vascularization and microvascular perfusion using intravital fluorescence microscopy and the dorsal skinfold chamber model in Syrian golden hamsters. Syngeneic transplantation was performed in order to exclude allograft- or xenograft-induced microvascular alterations.
