Perceived orientation of isolated line segments
Vision Research, 1968Abstract This investigation is concerned with the spatial elaboration of retinal signals occurring in the visual system. Guided by the recent electrophysiological evidence that retinal orientation is among the first isolated spatial cues, we have used a psychophysical method to study the relationship between perceived orientation and geometrical ...

Lens-free in-line optical isolators
Optics Letters, 1999We constructed a lens-free in-line optical isolator by embedding an isolator chip in a thermally expanded core (TEC) fiber without complicated optical alignment. The chip consists of two pairs of rutile wedges and garnet plates. We fabricated the TEC fibers by heating a single-mode fiber with a 200-mum outer diameter; low loss and a spot diameter as ...

Networks immune to isolated line failures
Networks, 1982AbstractA network is immune to a set of failures if all message transfers between operative sites can be completed in the presence of such failures. A set of line failures is isolated if no two failing lines are incident to the same site. Several classes of isolated line failure immune (ILFI) networks are defined, including a class with fewest lines ...

Isolating points by lines in the plane
Journal of Geometry, 1998The authors consider the problems of finding a minimal arrangement of straight lines, or of pseudolines (homeomorphic images of lines), that isolates every point of a specified finite set. Results are obtained for both problems. As can be imagined, the straight-line version of the problem is difficult, and the exact number of lines needed depends on ...

Integration of in-line optical isolators
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1996A new configuration of an optical isolator chip, which is suitable for use in integrated in-line optical isolators, has been proposed. The chip consists of a birefringent plate, a pair of birefringent wedges, and a Faraday rotator. The configuration makes the best use of transmission characteristics of expanded-core fibers in which the chip is embedded.

Frequent fire accidents in operating theaters (OR) prompted the need for safety regulations in ORs. Electrical fires were the cause in many of these misadventures. This prompted the development of policies such as the safe practices in hospital operating rooms. Use of anesthetic gases in ORs worsened the hazard of fires.

The Isolation and Detection of Atomic Resonance Lines
Applied Optics, 1968Since the spectrum of the resonance radiation from an atomic vapor consists only of those spectral lines that are absorbed by the vapor, resonance lamps can serve as monochromators for isolating these lines. The atomic vapor is produced by cathodic sputtering in a rare gas discharge or, in the case of elements with high vapor pressure at low ...

Characterizations of Simple Isolated Line Singularities
Canadian Mathematical Bulletin, 1999AbstractA line singularity is a function germ with a smooth 1-dimensional critical set . An isolated line singularity is defined by the condition that for every x ≠ 0, the germ of f at (x, 0) is equivalent to . Simple isolated line singularities were classified by Dirk Siersma and are analogous of the famous A − D − E singularities.

Isolation and Characterization of a Stromal Cell Line
1992Considerable progress in identifying cells and cytokines that regulate primary B cell differentiation has been made in the last few years, and it is now possible to present a model that identifies the stages at which various developmental signals act on B lineage cells.
