The isoquinoline alkaloids are a class of secondary metabolites classified into different groups, being the aporphinoids the most representative class. They are considered the second-largest class of alkaloids in terms of structural diversity staying behind only of indole alkaloids.

Extractions of isoquinoline alkaloids with butanol and octanol

Six different isoquinoline alkaloids (sanguinarine, chelerythrine, berberine, coptisine, allocryptopine, and protopine) were extracted by butanol and octanol from aqueous solution, pH 4.5. The samples were analyzed by HPLC. Butanol extraction was non-selective, alkaloids passed into organic phase in 83-98%.

Representatives of eleven different classes of isoquinoline alkaloids inhibit Na+, K+-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase in rat brain microsomal preparations. In most cases the Na+, K+-ATPase is more sensitive than Mg2+-ATPase to inhibition by the alkaloids.

Abstract The use of chiral formamidines affixed to variously substituted tetrahydroisoquinolines, allows asymmetric C-C bond forming reactions to occur α- to the amino group. In this manner, a wide variety of (S)-1-alkyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines were constructed in > 90% enantiomeric excess.
