Narrowing of the ITCZ in a warming climate: Physical mechanisms [PDF]
AbstractThe Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) narrows in response to global warming in both observations and climate models. However, a physical understanding of this narrowing is lacking. Here we show that the narrowing of the ITCZ in simulations of future climate is related to changes in the moist static energy (MSE) budget.

Lightning and the African ITCZ
Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2011Abstract The idea that tropical lightning activity follows the motion of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is based on anecdotal evidence, or at best indirect measurements. Definitive observations of lightning from satellite instruments are used here to demonstrate that the seasonal motion of peak lightning over tropical Africa has the same ...

The inner life of the Atlantic ITCZ
2023The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is a central component of the global circulation system, but remarkably little is known about the dynamical and thermodynamical structure of the convergence zone itself. This is true even for the structure of the low-level convergence that gives the ITCZ its name. Following on from the major international field

ITCZ-MIP: Understanding ITCZ width and its impacts on climate and circulation
2020<p>The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is a band of intense rainfall near the equator that dominates tropical climate. Recent work has demonstrated that most climate models predict a narrowing of the ITCZ under global warming and this narrowing may act as a control on global precipitation (Byrne et al., 2018).
