The ‘sticky’ ITCZ: ocean-moderated ITCZ shifts [PDF]

open access: yesClimate Dynamics, 2019
Across a range of simulations with a coupled atmosphere–ocean climate model, shifts in the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) are induced by an interhemispheric heating contrast. The response to heating anomalies which are polar amplified are contrasted with those which are largest in the tropics.

The Equatorial Energy Balance, ITCZ Position, and Double-ITCZ Bifurcations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2016
Abstract The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) migrates north–south on seasonal and longer time scales. Previous studies have shown that the zonal-mean ITCZ displacement off the equator is negatively correlated with the energy flux across the equator; when the ITCZ lies in the Northern Hemisphere, energy flows southward across the ...

Diurnal Cycle of the ITCZ in DYNAMO [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2018
Abstract During the 2011 special observing period of the Dynamics of the Madden–Julian Oscillation (DYNAMO) field experiment, two sounding arrays were established over the central Indian Ocean, one north and one south of the equator, referred to here as the NSA and SSA, respectively.

Lower-tropospheric humidity: climatology, trends and the relation to the ITCZ [PDF]

open access: yesTellus A: Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, 2013
The tropical region is an area of maximum humidity and serves as the major humidity source of the globe. Among other phenomena, it is governed by the so-called Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) which is commonly defined by converging low-level winds or enhanced precipitation.

Detecting the ITCZ in Instantaneous Satellite Data using Spatiotemporal Statistical Modeling: ITCZ Climatology in the East Pacific [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2011
AbstractA Markov random field (MRF) statistical model is introduced, developed, and validated for detecting the east Pacific intertropical convergence zone in instantaneous satellite data from May through October. The MRF statistical model uses satellite data at a given location as well as information from its neighboring points (in time and space) to ...

Seasonal and Interannual Variations of the Energy Flux Equator and ITCZ. Part I: Zonally Averaged ITCZ Position [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2016
Abstract In the zonal mean, the ITCZ lies at the foot of the ascending branch of the tropical mean meridional circulation, close to where the near-surface meridional mass flux vanishes. The ITCZ also lies near the energy flux equator (EFE), where the column-integrated meridional energy flux vanishes.

Seasonal and Interannual Variations of the Energy Flux Equator and ITCZ. Part II: Zonally Varying Shifts of the ITCZ [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2016
Abstract The ITCZ lies at the ascending branch of the tropical meridional overturning circulation, where near-surface meridional mass fluxes vanish. Near the ITCZ, column-integrated energy fluxes vanish, forming an atmospheric energy flux equator (EFE).

Reversal of the ITCZ Shift During the Satellite Era

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
A southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) during the latter half of the 20th century has been primarily attributed to interhemispheric differences in anthropogenic aerosol forcing.

Reduction of Pacific Double‐ITCZ Bias by Convection Parameterization in NCAR CESM2.2

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
The impact of convective closure on the double‐ITCZ bias in the NCAR CESM2.2 is investigated in this study. The standard CESM2.2 simulates a remarkable double‐ITCZ bias in the central and eastern Pacific, especially in boreal winter and spring ...

Eastern Tropical Pacific ITCZ and Lightning Activity

open access: yes, 2014
This study has been performed as a pilot study for a project regarding the meridional migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and its relationship with lightning activity in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). Objectives of this study were to analyze and improve lightning data to be used for such a study and to decide on a method and ...
