One-Trial Learning with Control of Item-Difficulty

Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1968
Ratings of difficulty were obtained for each of 2,500 letter-number pairs. The ratings were used to construct three pools of items: Homogeneous Easy, Homogeneous Difficult, and Heterogeneous. Rock's (1957) experiment was conducted thrice, once with each pool of rated items. Each replication used 30 subjects.

On the Relationship Between Differential Item Functioning and Item Difficulty

Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2011
The relationship between differential item functioning (DIF) and item difficulty on the SAT is such that more difficult items tended to exhibit DIF in favor of the focal group (usually minority groups). These results were reported by Kulick and Hu, and Freedle and have been enthusiastically discussed by more recent literature.

The current study was accomplished to replicate or refute

Psychological Reports, 1978
90 students in introductory psychology responded to a questionnaire designed to assess test-taking strategies on multiple-choice tests. The data suggested that previous studies may not have actually tested item-difficulty sequence effects since item sequence is under examinees' control.

Analysis of Distractor Difficulty in Multiple-Choice Items

Psychometrika, 2004
Two psychometric models are presented for evaluating the difficulty of the distractors in multiple-choice items. They are based on the criterion of rising distractor selection ratios, which facilitates interpretation of the subject and item parameters. Statistical inferential tools are developed in a Bayesian framework: modal a posteriori estimation by
