Hygroscopic cycle for enhanced water efficiency in thermal power plants

open access: yesEnvironmental Progress &Sustainable Energy, Volume 44, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
Abstract This article presents a methodology for calculating the potential for water savings when replacing the Rankine cycle with the hygroscopic cycle in power plants. The savings were analyzed in thermal power plants with different generating units (diesel, gas, steam, and combined cycle), different cooling systems (seawater open cycle, adiabatic ...

Prevalence and Virulence Profiles of Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated From Different Animals

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 2, March 2025.
The higher prevalence of K. pneumoniae was observed in companion than in wild animals. The predominant animals were dogs, turtles and snakes. Some animal‐sourced isolates carried virulence factors and revealed phylogenetic relatedness with human pathogens, suggesting a zoonotic risk between these two populations.

Comprehensive Analysis of blaCTX-M1 Gene Expression Alongside iutA, csgA, and kpsMII Virulence Genes in Septicemic Escherichia coli Using Real-Time PCR. [PDF]

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Background: Sepsis is a serious worldwide health concern, and Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the main cause. This study investigates the co-expression of blaCTX-M1 and iutA, csgA, and kpsMII genes in E. coli isolated from septicemic patients, aiming to clarify the interaction between virulence and resistance. Methods: This study evaluated 100 E.

Molecular Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae Strains Isolated From Dairy Cows in Xinjiang, China

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 1, January 2025.
WGS identified 27 wzi allele types (2 new), 16 K antigen serotypes, 6 O antigen serotypes, 25 sequence types (3 new), 39 antibiotic resistance and 57 virulence genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae from milk samples of cows with and without mastitis. Phylogenetic analysis showed high genomic diversity in K. pneumoniae.

Assessing the diversity of the virulence potential of Escherichia coli isolated from bacteremia in São Paulo, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Most of the knowledge of the virulence determinants of extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) comes from studies with human strains causing urinary tract infections and neonatal meningitis and animal strains causing avian colibacillosis.
