Risk of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Following Hospital‐Treated Infections and Modulatory Role of Host Genetics to Support a Multi‐Hit Pathogenesis Model

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Hospital‐treated infections are linked to increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease in a large prospective cohort. This risk differs by infection burden, time since infection, and host immune‐genetic susceptibility. The findings support a multi‐hit pathogenesis model in which severe infection and inherited susceptibility jointly shape inflammatory ...

Vida, interioridad y lucha. Una definición de la vida en diálogo con H. Plessner y H. Jonas

open access: yesIdeas y Valores, 2013
El objetivo de este artículo es examinar la definición de “vida” en el pensamiento de Helmut Plessner y de Hans Jonas, para, con base en las evidencias biológicas y las reflexiones de estos autores, plantear la pregunta por las categorías fundamentales ...

The Preparatory (Anti)Bonding Character of Molecular Orbitals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Herein, a concept to qualitatively predict changes in bond dissociation energies upon reduction or oxidation of molecular compounds is introduced. Changing the population of so‐called preparatory molecular orbitals influences how molecular fragments are relaxing after bond cleavage, which is shown for isolated organometallic aluminum compounds as well ...

Unraveling Terminal Cobalt–Antimony Double Bond: Breaking New Ground in Heavy Pnictogen Multiple Bonds

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
N‐heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) function as “molecular scissors,” cleaving otherwise inert Sb═Sb bonds in distibenes to generate monomeric, zwitterionic stibinide species. These intermediates act as efficient stibinidene transfer reagents, granting access to a rare terminal cobalt–stibinidene complex.

Targeting miR-181a/b in retinitis pigmentosa: implications for disease progression and therapy

open access: yesCell & Bioscience
Background Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetically heterogeneous group of degenerative disorders causing progressive vision loss due to photoreceptor death. RP affects other retinal cells, including the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE).

Low-Intensity Sonoporation-Induced Intracellular Signalling of Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Fibroblasts and Endothelial Cells

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2020
The use of ultrasound (US) and microbubbles (MB), usually referred to as sonoporation, has great potential to increase the efficacy of chemotherapy.

Extended Anionic Network in Mixed‐Valent Nitridocobaltates(I/II) LnCo2N2 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd)

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents the high‐pressure synthesis of LnCo2N2 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) with Co in mixed valent states of +I/+II. The compounds demonstrate the stabilization of a nitridocobaltate with extended anionic Co–N layers where Co is threefold coordinated.

Organocatalytic Enantioselective Addition of Malonates to Cyclic Imines: A Short Total Synthesis of Tetraponerine T‐1

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
A stereoselective functionalization method of cyclic imines under mild organocatalytic conditions was developed. Bifunctional cinchona alkaloid catalysts combined with carefully optimized reaction conditions to suppress background reactivity enabled highly enantio‐ and diastereoselective addition reactions of malonates to cyclic imines.

Pro-Environmental Energy Behavior in the Military: Assessing Behavior Change Factors at a Selected Military Unit

open access: yesEnergies, 2020
The purpose of this study is to explore how pro-environmental energy behavior is manifested at a military unit and what behavioral change factors can enhance such behavior. The military unit represents an organization dominated by an exceptionally strong
