The Full Journal Bearing

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1949
The basic mathematics of the full journal bearing have been known since 1904 when Sommerfeld‡ made the complete solution, for the infinite journal, of Reynolds theory of 1886. The detailed application of the theory has not been possible owing to the uncertainty in the choice of boundary conditions. In this paper the Reynolds condition that p = 0 at θ =

Automotive Bearing Systems—Journal Bearings

2012
The principal use for journal bearings in automotive applications is for the crankshaft bearings, piston pin joint, balancer shafts, and crankshafts. These can either be half shells in which a split is required for assembly (e.g., crankshaft bearings) or bushes that can be inserted without a split (e.g., piston pin joints). For engine bearings, the oil

Counterrotating Journal Bearings

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1962
A theoretical derivation is given showing that whenever the center of curvature of a bearing does not coincide with its center of rotation, synchronous counterrotation will produce a load capacity. Test results are given for a number of bearing designs that operated successfully under synchronous counterrotation with load capacities beyond 1500 psi ...

Journal Bearing Performance

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1935
Abstract This paper contains an application of the hydrodynamical theory of lubrication to the practical design of journal bearings. In a simplified method satisfactory for most engineering applications the authors consider the journal bearing as a plane bearing.

Functioning of Journal Bearings

1969
When a journal bearing operates under conditions of hydrodynamic lubrication there is no contact between the rotating journal and the fixed bearing surface. In steady running the journal assumes an eccentric position, described as the journal attitude, in which the journal centre is displaced from the centre of curvature of the bearing surface in such ...

Narrow journal bearings

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2002
In this report, numerical analyses of very narrow journal bearings are presented. The pressure distribution was determined for a number of different width-diameter ratios and eccentricities. For each combination, a number of relevant dimensionless design quantities were computed.

The Magnetohydrodynamic Journal Bearing

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1963
An analysis of an infinite journal bearing is presented for the case of an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a magnetic field. The magnetohydrodynamic form of Reynolds’ bearing equation is derived and solved for the pressure distribution. The load carrying capacity is determined from the pressure distribution.

Journal Bearings in Vibration

1969
The dynamic characteristics of the journal bearings play a major part in the vibration of turbomachinery. Knowledge of these vibration effects was long purely empirical. A bearing design to avoid one type of oil whirl was described in 1925 [25]. Bearing characteristics were known to affect critical speed phenomena, but the magnitude of the change in ...

cavitation in journal bearings

Scientific Lubrication, 1953
The existence of cavitation in the divergent part of a lubricating oil film has long been presumed, but its occurrence has so far been demonstrated only in a very limited way and its consequences are scarcely appreciated. The investigation now described provides on a small scale a more definite indication of certain primary effects of cavitation in a ...
