Archives of Dermatology and Syphilology, 1935In his textbook, Kaposi 1 called attention to an alarming complication of infantile eczema. He stated that the eruption looks like varicella but undoubtedly is not. It is accompanied with high fever, backache and other symptoms of varicella, but usually it does not cause prostration, although one child whom he observed died in convulsions.

JAMA, 1967Numerous vesicles and pustules superimposed on underlying dry eczematous dermatitis suddenly developed in a child with infantile eczema (Figure). A diagnosis of "bacterial infection" led to antibiotic therapy but the lesions continued to spread and were unresponsive to a second antibiotic.

Archives of Dermatology, 1984Generalized cutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection has been reported to occur as a complication of thermal injury. 1 We encountered a patient with a healing second-degree burn who had Kaposi's varicelliform eruption. From his lesions, we isolated a virus that was probably HSV type 1.

My attention was first directed to this subject by observation of the eruption the course of which is here described.
