Kaposi's Varicelliform Eruption

Two cases of recurrent Kaposi's varicelliform eruption caused by herpesvirus hominis in patients with Darier's disease are presented. Herpesvirus hominis was cultured in both cases. Only one similar case has been published in the past. The course of Kaposi's varicelliform eruption was mild in two successive outbreaks.

Generalized cutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection has been reported to occur as a complication of thermal injury. 1 We encountered a patient with a healing second-degree burn who had Kaposi's varicelliform eruption. From his lesions, we isolated a virus that was probably HSV type 1.

Persons subject to atopic eczema may present a varioliform eruption as a complication. Kaposi 1 recognized this fact, describing the eruption in 1887. Juliusberg 2 also recorded the condition, under the title of pustulosis acuta varioliformis. By a series of observations some months ago I was led to the conclusion that the virus of herpes simplex when implanted on diseased skin may result in an eruption of greater severity and extent than the usual group of herpetic vesicles. My attention was first directed to this subject by observation of the eruption the course of which is here described.

Ein von Kaposi und nachher von Juliusberg beschriebenes Krankheitsbild findet sich im Schrifttum unter verschiedenen Bezeichnungen. In England und Amerika (USA) wird es gewohnlich „Kaposis varicelliforme Eruption“ genannt, in Deutschland neuestens „Eczema herpeticatum“.
