An experimental study conducted in the NASA Langley 15-in Low-Turbulence Wind Tunnel demonstrated that a relatively short-chord flow-aligned plate placed in the proximity of a cylindar could produce nearly one-signed oscillatory transverse control vortices.

One of the most important problems in hydrodynamics is the behaviour of low-dimensional dynamics in closed and open flows. Lorenz 1 and Ruelle & Takens 2 proposed that the dynamics of a hydrodynamic system at the onset of turbulence could be described by strange attractors and low-dimensional differential equations.

Destabilization of the Karman vortex street by frequency-modulated excitation

A two-dimensional cylinder is subjected to frequency-modulated excitation in the cross-stream direction. Transition from a locked-in response to a completely destabilized response can be attained by lowering the value of modulation frequency while all other parameters are maintained constant.

Clouds often reveal a small-scale vortex shedding in the wake of mountainous islands. Unlike the classical bidimensional Karman street, these observed vortex streets are affected by the earth’s rotation and vertical stratification of the atmosphere. These effects induce a selective destabilization of anticyclonic vorticity regions.

On the Impingement of von Karman Vortex Street on a Delta Wing

It is well known that aircraft undergoing high angle of attack excursions (e.g., the Cobra maneuver) may experience asymmetric forebody vortex shedding under certain conditions. The detachment of these vortices from the forebody is similar to that observed from von Karman vortex shedding from cylinders.
