Peripherin gene is linked to keratin 18 gene on human chromosome 12
Somatic Cell and Molecular Genetics, 1995Peripherin is a neuron-specific intermediate filament (IF) protein, found primarily in phylogenetically old regions of the nervous system. Whereas other neuronal IF genes have only two to three introns and are scattered in the genome, the peripherin gene (PRPH) has a complex intron-exon structure like nonneuronal IF genes that are clustered in tandem ...

Keratin 18 provides resistance to Fas‐mediated liver failure in mice
European Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2009AbstractBackground Keratins are intermediate filament proteins of epithelial cells with pivotal functions for cell integrity. They comprise keratins 18 [K18] and 8 [K8] in hepatocytes. Keratins are of major importance for an intact cellular microarchitecture and have protective functions in human liver diseases.

Keratin 18 and Heat-Shock Protein in Chronic Kidney Disease
2013Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an affliction associated with increased systemic stress and cell death. We will review the role of keratin 18 (K-18) and caspase-cleaved CK-18 (ccK-18) as markers for increased apoptosis and necrosis during renal failure progression.

Investigation of the regulation of CFTR by cytoskeletal keratin 18
2014Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is a protein associated with the lethal genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF) and is responsible for electrolyte and water transport in epithelial cells lining various tissues. CFTR functions both as an anion channel, conducting Cl- and HCO3-, and as a regulator of several membrane ion ...

[The clinical importance of keratin 18 in breast cancer].
Zentralblatt fur Gynakologie, 1999This study was performed to determine the prognostic significance and the biological function of the structure protein keratin 18 (K18) in a group of patients with breast cancer.Paraffin sections from the primary tumors in 80 patients with breast cancer were examined for the expression of K18 by immunohistochemical staining with the monoclonal antibody

Mutation in keratin 18 induces mitochondrial fragmentation in liver-derived epithelial cells
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2008Microtubules (MTs) and microfilaments (MFs) are known to modulate mitochondrial morphology, distribution and function. However, little is known evidence about the role of intermediate filaments (IFs) in modulating mitochondria except desmin. To investigate whether or not the IFs regulate mitochondrial morphology, distribution, and function, we ...

Differentiation, 1986
Keratin 18 is a type-I keratin that is found in a variety of simple epithelial tissues. In mice, the corresponding protein, called Endo B, is expressed at the 4- to 8-cell stage of mouse development and may be one of the first intermediate-filament proteins synthesized after fertilization. A cDNA clone for keratin 18, designated pK18, was isolated from

Localization of Merkel cells at hairless and hairy human skin sites using keratin 18
Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 1995Merkel cells are neurosecretory cells of the skin with epithelial features such as desmosomes and expression of keratins 8, 18, 19, and 20. Merkel cells are scarcely distributed in adult human skin. Although they are present in hair follicles, their density is higher at hairless anatomic sites such as palms and soles.

Deregulated expression of the keratin 18 gene in human colon carcinoma cells.
Somatic cell and molecular genetics, 2001The keratin 18 (K18) gene is expressed at a normal level in cells of nontumorigenic clones derived from the SW613-S human colon carcinoma cell line, but is overexpressed in cells of tumorigenic clones. A high level of expression was also found in the cells from 10 of 15 other human colon carcinoma cell lines. The expression of the gene is downregulated
