BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 1971SummaryFifty patients who developed ketosis in labour were investigated and five different methods of treatment assessed. The clinical results and biochemical values were compared with those of a group of patients with non‐ketotic labours. It was concluded that few patients with ketonuria in labour are dehydrated, acidaemic or hypoglycaemic.

However, as the level of palmitate is increased, the maximum capacity of the preferential pathway, namely complete oxidation to CO 2 , is reached and ketogenesis then predominates.
