Crack kinking in piezoelectric materials

Acta Mechanica Sinica, 1998
A solution is presented for a class of two-dimensional electroelastic branched crack problems. Explicit Green's function for an interface crack subject to an edge dislocation is developed using the extended Stroh formulation allowing the branched crack problem to be expressed in terms of coupled singular integral equations.

An experimental study of interfacial crack kinking

Experimental Mechanics, 1993
The growth of a crack located at the interface between two linearly elastic solids is investigated experimentally. It is found that the crack may advance by kinking into either of the adherends or by propagating along the interface itself, depending on the applied loading conditions.

Crack Kinking Criterion for Bimaterial System

New and Emerging Computational Methods: Applications to Fracture, Damage, and Reliability, 2002
This paper is aimed to find out a suitable criterion for predicting the interfacial crack in the bimaterial system. An investigation was undertaken into the interfacial crack kinking phenomena in a bimaterial specimen of epoxy and aluminum alloy using a combination of experimental method and numerical simulation.

Kinked cracks in an anisotropic material

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1991
Abstract A kinked semi-infinite crack in an anisotropic material is analyzed. The stress intensity factors of the kinked crack tip are expressed in terms of those associated with the main crack prior to kinking. The asymptotic stress field around the crack tip is derived for the degenerate case in which the two complex parameters of the anisotropic ...

Energy release rate and crack kinking

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1981
Abstract A closed form solution is presented for the energy release rate at the onset of kinking of a straight crack in an infinite elastic medium subjected to a predominantly Mode I loading. The solution is accurate to the second order of kink angle and is carried out by the method which models the kink as a continuous distribution of infinitesimal ...

A Solution for Interacting Kinked and Branched Cracks

46th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 2005
To study realistic fracture problems that include many interacting cracks of complex shapes, a technique has been developed based on superposition and dislocation theory. This method is valid for brittle fracture conditions in an infinite plate under general far field loading.

Kinked crack in a bending trapezoidal plate

International Journal of Fracture, 2001
The interaction problem of a kinked crack and the edges of a bending trapezoidal plate which takes the effects of transverse shear deformation into account is presented. The research method is based upon the complex potential technique of Muskhelishvili using conformal mapping.

Initiation, Propagation, and Kinking of an Antiplane Crack

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1988
An infinite linear elastic body containing a semi-infinite crack is loaded by a planar antiplane stress pulse parallel to the crack. The stress wave strikes the crack at time t=0 and at some arbitrary later time tf, the crack begins to extend straight ahead with constant speed vo. After some later tb, the crack suddenly stops, then kinks and propagates

Kinked Cracks and Richard Fracture Criterion

International Journal of Fracture, 2002
Mixed-mode stress intensity factors for kink cracks in front of a pre-existing crack were computed. It can be demonstrated that the empirical criterion by Richard is an excellent interpolation relation for the kink crack problem.
