Hemagglutinins of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella oxytoca

The occurrence and characteristics of hemagglutinins were investigated in 310 Klebsiella strains (195 K. pneumoniae- and 115 K. oxytoca-strains). Mannose-sensitive (MS)-hemagglutinins as well as Mannose-resistant (MR/K)-hemagglutinins could be demonstrated, only 13 Klebsiella-strains were not able to hemagglutinate.

Transduction in Klebsiella

PHAGE-MEDIATED transduction has been reported in strains of four genera of Enterobacteriaceae: Salmonella, Escherichia, Shigella, and Proteus1. Clarke2 described possible transduction of a single Klebsiella pneumoniae auxotroph to prototrophy, but this has not been confirmed.

Method for differentiating Klebsiella planticola and Klebsiella terrigena from other Klebsiella species

Conventional methods usually fail to identify Klebsiella planticola and Klebsiella terrigena, which represent up to 19% of clinical Klebsiella isolates. By combining four carbon substrate assimilation tests and two conventional tests, the method identified these species with a specificity and a sensitivity of 100%.

Klebsiella ozaenae Cholecystitis

The authors report a case of Klebsiella ozaenae septicemia, cholecystitis and urinary tract infection in a 65-year-old morbidly obese woman with diabetes. Klebsiella ozaenae is considered a nonpathogen or colonizer rarely causing septicemia. This is the first reported case of cholecystitis due to this agent.

A 71-year-old woman presented with a 1-week history of abdominal pain. She had end-stage renal disease due to hypertension, and had been on chronic peritoneal dialysis for 10 years. An abdominal radiograph showed a large amount of intraperitoneal air. We did paracentesis; and obtained turbid ascites with a high leucocyte count.
