Early and late results of the GUEPAR hinge knee prosthesis were evaluated on a series of 184 operations performed before January 1st, 1974. There were 3 immediate deaths and 26 before 5 years. Nineteen prostheses were removed. One hundred and twenty-six knees had degenerative osteoarthritis, 52 rheumatoid arthritis.

Treatment of the exposed knee prosthesis [PDF]
Ten knees with early tissue breakdown after knee arthroplasty resulting in exposed prostheses were treated with different plastic surgical techniques. Six knees were successfully covered: four using a gastrocnemius musculocutaneous flap, one using a fasciocutaneous flap, and one using split-skin grafts. Four knees failed: two using local skin flaps and

Revision rates after primary hip and knee replacement in England between 2003 and 2006 [PDF]
Background: Hip and knee replacement are some of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the world. Resurfacing of the hip and unicondylar knee replacement are increasingly being used.

Modeling and Control of Knee-Ankle-Toe Active Transfemoral Prosthesis
The main joints of lower limb are hip, knee, ankle, and toe. Because of accidents or diseases, some people have to amputate. Wearing prosthesis can help them return to normal life.

Effects of Prosthesis Mass on Hip Energetics, Prosthetic Knee Torque, and Prosthetic Knee Stiffness and Damping Parameters Required for Transfemoral Amputees to Walk With Normative Kinematics [PDF]
We quantify how the hip energetics and knee torque required for an above-knee prosthesis user to walk with the kinematics of able-bodied humans vary with the inertial properties of the prosthesis. We also select and optimize passive mechanical components

Abstract Prosthetic instability is the third most frequent cause for the failure of total knee replacement (TKR), which leads to between 10% and 22% of surgical revisions. In addition to individual factors such as previous instabilities or deformities, an associated neuromuscular condition, rheumatoid arthritis or obesity, the main causes for ...

The mechanics of the knee and prosthesis design [PDF]
The mechanisms controlling and limiting movement and serving to transmit load between the femur and the tibia are discussed. Having accounted for the transmission of all components of force and couple across the joint and noted the load-bearing role of the menisci, some principles which might guide the design of knee prostheses are deduced.

Periprosthetic fractures (PPFs) in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are challenging for orthopedic surgeons. A floating knee injury around TKA, especially with component loosening, attributes more complexities in management for the joint reconstruction ...

Bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty: One Mobile-Bearing and One Fixed-Bearing
We compared the early results of mobile-bearing knee prosthesis with fixed-bearing knee prosthesis in 16 patients who had one-stage, sequential, bilateral replacements.

Numerical Measurement of a Virtual Model for the Knee Prosthesis Geometry
The human knee joint usually suffers progressive deterioration with time. The conventional cure of this issue is to replace it with an alternate knee by applying the prosthesis implant.
