Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Roles of design knowledge in knowledge-based systems

open access: yesInternational Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 1996
Abstract Recent research suggests that the abilities of a knowledge-based system (KBS) depend in part on the amount of explicit knowledge it has about the way it is designed. This knowledge is often called design knowledge because it reflects design decisions that a KBS developer makes regarding what ontologies to embody in the system, what solution ...

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

‘More than a pill’: a qualitative co-exploration of the things that matter in young women's stories of adherence to antiretroviral treatment in South Africa

open access: yesResearch Involvement and Engagement
Background Young women living with perinatal infections of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (YWLPHIV) in low- and middle-income countries are more likely to be challenged by social and health inequities, which can make adherence to life-long treatment ...

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

Knowledge acquisition for knowledge based decision systems

open access: yesApplied Artificial Intelligence, 1997
Knowledge-based decision systems support the decision analysis process with decision analytic knowledge as well as domain-specific knowledge. The knowledge in the knowledgebased decision system is usually represented by influence diagrams. In the development of knowledge-based decision systems, knowledge acquisition is one of the most difficult ...

Integrating physical modeling with artificial intelligence for predicting fish survival zones in polluted rivers to maintain a sustainable aquaculture industry

open access: yesScientific Reports
Water quality prediction and management are crucial for ensuring the sustainability of water supplies. Contaminated water can harm humans and aquatic life.
