Rate distortion and denoising of individual data using Kolmogorov complexity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We examine the structure of families of distortion balls from the perspective of Kolmogorov complexity. Special attention is paid to the canonical rate-distortion function of a source word which returns the minimal Kolmogorov complexity of all distortion

A Universal Protein Ladder for Standardization of Diverse FRET Assays

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Translating FRET measurements from in vitro to intracellular environments requires universal benchmarks. We present a modular protein ladder using TPR motifs to harmonize data across diverse platforms. This predictable calibration curve bridges single molecule FRET measurements, with cell based measurements including FLIM‐FRET.

The process complexity and effective random tests [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We propose a variant of the Kolmogorov concept of complexity which yields a common theory of finite and infinite random sequences. The process complexity does not oscillate.

Approximating Kolmogorov complexity

open access: yes, 2023
International audienceIt is well known that the Kolmogorov complexity function (the minimal length of a program producing a given string, when an optimal programming language is used) is not computable and, moreover, does not have computable lower bounds.

Herbivory‐Induced Stomatal Opening Triggers the Dispersal of an Invasive Insect Herbivore

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The invasive leafminer Phthorimaea absoluta uniquely manipulates plant defenses by inducing stomatal opening in tomato. This response, mediated by the stomatal regulator IQM1, enhances the release of the repellent volatile benzaldehyde. This volatile triggers the dispersal of adult moths, facilitates colonization of new hosts, and leads to rapid ...

Space Jam‐Ming: Generating Interstitial Space Using Fragmented Granular GelMA to Investigate Novel Paradigms of Cancer Metastasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microgels enable independent control of stiffness and interstitial space, overcoming limitations of conventional 3D hydrogels. Using fragmented gelatin methacryloyl microgels, we show that stiffness does not restrict non‐metastatic breast cancer growth, contrary to bulk hydrogels, and reveal the role of adherent‐to‐suspension transition in cancer ...

Teaching Complexity and Its Practical Implications in Leadership Development Programs

open access: yes, 2018
This article describes an advanced leadership seminar for senior managers and executives. The three module seminar describes how thoughtful leaders can learn to succeed even under conditions of extreme complexity. The first module describes complexity in

Towards a Compositional Framework for Describing Human Phenotypes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The Phenotype Assembly Method (PhenoAM) decomposes phenotype variables into measurable Features and typed Qualifiers, enabling standardized, machine‐readable Phenome Data Elements (PhenoDEs) that preserve measurement context. Applied in the International Human Phenome Project (IHPP), the framework yields 58 371 PhenoDEs and supports component‐level ...

Temperature‐Modulated MEMS Gas Sensor Array Enabled by Physics‐Informed Deep Learning for Thermal‐Runaway Characteristic Gas Discrimination

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work presents a 2 × 2 integrated single‐chip MEMS gas sensor array with temperature modulation and deep learning for discriminating thermal‐runaway characteristic gases. The array generates distinct temperature‐modulated response patterns for four characteristic gases (H2, CO, CH4, and CO2), while a HK‐MoE model is developed to achieve robust ...

Astrocytes Coordinate Neurovascular Coupling During Prolonged Sensory Demand via AQP4/TRPA1/BEST1/D‐Serine Signaling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Neuronal activation leads to astrocytic transient volume changes, activating transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channels, leading to Ca2+ influx. Activation of TRPA1 causes the release of D‐serine through BEST1. Finally, the augmented extracellular levels of D‐serine boost neuronal activity by binding GluN1‐containing NMDARs, leading to CBV
