Antibacterial Film Formation through Iron(III) Complexation and Oxidation-Induced Cross-Linking of OEG-DOPA

open access: yes, 2019
Catechols are prone to oxidative polymerization as well as complex formation with metal ions. These two features of catechols have played an important role in the construction of functional films on various surfaces. For example, marine antifouling films

A Mononuclear Scenario for the Copper‐Catalyzed Monooxygenation of Phenolic Substrates

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Whereas a dinuclear pathway applies to the monooxygenation of phenols by the type 3 copper enzyme tyrosinase, a mononuclear pathway has been identified for the same reaction in corresponding small‐molecule systems. DFT calculations of five copper model complexes reveal that the latter mechanism is energetically feasible, identifying all ...

Models of probabilistic category learning in Parkinson's disease: Strategy use and the effects of L-dopa

open access: yes, 2010
Probabilistic category learning (PCL) has become an increasingly popular paradigm to study the brain bases of learning and memory. It has been argued that PCL relies on procedural habit learning, which is impaired in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, as

Protective Effects of L-Dopa and Carbidopa Combined Treatments on Human Catecholaminergic Cells

open access: yes, 2012
Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders characterized by decreased levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) in the striatum of the brain, as a result of degeneration of DA neurons.

Novel Zwitterionic Polydopamine Nanofiller‐Reinforced Hybrid Membranes With Superior Antifouling Performance for Wastewater Treatment

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
This work reports one‐pot synthesized novel zwitterionic polydopamine‐silica (ZSiPDA) nanofillers for fabricating PES hybrid ultrafiltration membranes with enhanced hydrophilicity, permeability, and antifouling performance. The optimized membrane achieved over 91% humic acid removal and showed strong potential for municipal wastewater treatment.

L-Dopa in Hepatic Coma

open access: yesAnnals of Surgery, 1976
The use of L-Dopa in hepatic coma has been the subject of numerous reports since 1970. The following represents our experience with a rather heterogenous group of patients treated at the Massachusetts General Hospital over the past 4 years. Thirty-five patients with severe liver disease, a mean age of 53 +/- 3.5 years, including nutritional cirrhosis ...

Diagnostic yield and copy number variants findings in 219 adult patients with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract In a clinical setting, exome sequencing (ES) with copy number variant (CNV) analysis is currently the most effective approach for developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE). However, trio‐based ES is often not feasible in adults, its costs remain prohibitive in certain health care settings, and computational tools for CNV calling still

Analysis of amino acids in Mucuna pruriens supplements using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

open access: yesAmino Acids
Mucuna pruriens (MP), or velvet bean, has been used as an alternative medicine in India for over 4500 years, predominantly due to the natural abundance of the non-protein amino acid L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA).

Relationship between L-DOPA-induced reduction in motor and exploratory activity and degree of DAT binding in the rat

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2014
Purpose: The present study assessed the influence of L-DOPA administration on neostriatal dopamine (DA) transporter (DAT) binding in relation to motor and exploratory behaviors in the rat. Methods: Rats received injections of 5 mg/kg L-DOPA, 10 mg/kg L ...
