Background Resistance to chemotherapy drugs (e.g. taxol) has been a major obstacle in successful cancer treatment. In A549 human lung adenocarcinoma, acquired resistance to the first-line chemotherapy taxol has been a critical problem in clinics ...

Lactosylceramide in inflammatory bowel disease: a biochemical study. [PDF]
A simple technique for isolating lipids from small pieces of tissue was applied to mucosal biopsies and samples of resected intestine from patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Scanning densitometry of two dimensional chromatograms showed increased concentrations of the membrane associated glycosphingolipid lactosylceramide in Crohn's disease, on ...

Involvement of murine β-1,4-galactosyltransferase V in lactosylceramide biosynthesis [PDF]
Human β-1,4-galactosyltransferase (β-1,4-GalT) V was shown to be involved in the biosynthesis of N-glycans, O-glycans and lactosylceramide (Lac-Cer) by in vitro studies. To determine its substrate specificity, enzymatic activity and its products were analyzed using mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cells from β-1,4-GalT V (B4galt5)-mutant mice. Analysis

Deletion of ASAH2 in intestinal epithelial cells induces the accumulation of ganglioside GD3 via regulating ST8SIA1. GD3 is identified as the glycolipid ligand for the inhibitory receptor Siglec‐E on macrophages. GD3/Siglec‐E ligation polarizes macrophages and promotes the proliferation of colonic ST2+ T regulatory cells via the induction of IL‐33. The

Selection of Host Plasma Membrane Lipids by HIV‐1 Gag Protein
Enrichment of sphingomyelin in the HIV‐1 envelope arises from Gag binding to PI(4,5)P2, which triggers reorganization of plasma membrane sphingomyelin/cholesterol domains through unknown mechanisms. We propose that cholesterol‐mediated interleaflet coupling between sphingomyelin and PI(4,5)P2, rather than interdigitation, underlies Gag‐induced lipid ...

What's new? Estrogen receptors likely influence the development of laryngeal cancer and are of particular interest in regard to their relationship with the vitamin D metabolite 24R,25(OH)2D3. In this study the authors examined interactions between 24R,25(OH)2D3 and estrogen‐responsive laryngeal tumorigenesis.

Lactosylceramide stimulates aortic smooth muscle cell proliferation
We have investigated the effects of various sphingolipids on aortic smooth muscle cell proliferation employing viable cell counting, [3H] thymidine incorporation into DNA and the release of lactate dehydrogenase. Assays for UDP Gal: GlcCer Bl-4 galactosyltransferase (GalT-2) in control and treated cells were pursued simultaneously.

From Molecule to Meaning: Neuronopathic Biomarkers and Clinical Relevance in GM1
ABSTRACT GM1 gangliosidosis is a rare, progressively neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder characterized by profound central nervous system involvement and substantial clinical heterogeneity. The development of reliable biomarkers is essential for tracking disease progression, stratifying patients, and advancing clinical trial readiness. Primary

Sphingolipids are vital components of cell membranes. Metabolic disruptions of sphingolipids, including ceramide and sphingosine‐1‐phosphate, are linked to neurological disorders. This article summarizes the classification, structure, and metabolic processes of sphingolipids, and the physiological and pathological effects of sphingolipid metabolism and
