Plants, people and their shared heritage: A comparative medicinal and wild food ethnobotany of Albanians, Greeks and Aromanians living in the Gjirokaster area, southern Albania

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Traditional knowledge about wild plants connects people to nature and sustains both cultural identity and biodiversity. This study explores how cultural exchange among Albanians, Greeks and Aromanians in southern Albania shapes the use and naming of medicinal and food plants.

Testing optimal defense theory: Root resistance selection in chicory (Cichorium intybus) reduces foliar defense and alters aphid performance and feeding behavior

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Root‐focused resistance in chicory reduces defenses in leaves, impairing root aphids but enhancing foliar aphid performance. Selecting root resistance can create unintended trade‐offs across plant organs. Abstract BACKGROUND Plants are constantly exposed to a wide range of herbivores at both aboveground (AG) and belowground (BG) levels, involving ...

Stability studies of cynaropicrin–major sesquiterpene lactone of Cynara cardunculus leaves

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
This study investigated its stability under high temperature and pH, mimicking agronomic extremes and under soil context. Bioassays demonstrated that degradation products exhibited higher phytotoxic activity than cynaropicrin and deacylcynaropicrin. This is the first study about cynaropicrin's stability, characterizing degradation products, and their ...

First Assessment of Genetic Damage in the Speckled Cockroach (Nauphoeta cinerea) After Consumption of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) Cultivated and Commercialized in Northeastern, Brazil

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study reports, for the first time, the use of the speckled cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea as a promising bioindicator for genotoxic monitoring. It was validated through control groups (both positive and negative) in addition to testing lettuce (Lactuca sativa ) samples from public street markets consumed by N. cinerea specimens in Pernambuco,

Art v 1 and Amb a 4 Co‐Sensitization Identifies Italian Patients at Risk for Mugwort‐Celery‐Spice Syndrome

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
Three molecular profiles identified among Art v 1/Amb a 4‐sensitized patients: Art v 1 monosensitization, Amb a 4 monosensitization, and dual sensitization to both allergens. Art v 1 monosensitization was predominantly associated with allergic rhinitis, reflecting a classical airborne allergy pattern.

Stable Plastid Transformation in Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Molecular Biology, 2005
Although plastid transformation in higher plants was first demonstrated in the early 1990s it is only recently that the technology is being extended to a broader range of species. To date, the production of fertile transplastomic plants has been reported for tobacco, tomato, petunia, soybean, cotton and Lesquerella fendleri (Brassicaceae).

Canadian boreal restored mining sites sustain diverse pollinator communities, including species of conservation concern

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Revegetated mine tailing storage facilities support pollinator abundance, diversity, richness and evenness comparable to recently logged boreal forest sites. Agronomic and spontaneous revegetation strategies host similar pollinator and Bombus community structures, indicating multiple rehabilitation approaches can effectively restore pollinator habitat.
