Lake-size dependency of wind shear and convection as controls on gas exchange [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
High-frequency physical observations from 40 temperate lakes were used to examine the relative contributions of wind shear (u*) and convection (w*) to turbulence in the surface mixed layer.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Employing the Peltier Effect to Control Motor Operating Temperatures

open access: yesEnergies, 2023
Electrical insulation failure is the most common failure mechanism in electrical machines (motors and generators). High temperatures and/or temperature gradients (HTTG) are the main drivers of insulation failure in electrical machines.

The Lake

open access: yesHCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine, 2022
Description Shuffling along on an early fall morning in Germany, I looked out onto this lake and felt a sense of peace. The rolling fog weaved through the trees, caressing the floating vessels and kissing the calm water. The sight eased my soul in those early hours.

Lakes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Lakes have always held an aesthetic fascination for people; they figure prominently in both art and literature and have even been endowed with spiritual qualities. For example, the nineteenth century American writer Henry D.

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Extraction and Surface Activity of Australian Native Plant Extracts: Alphitonia excelsa

open access: yesColloids and Interfaces
Saponin surfactants extracted from plants have significant potential applications in many industries. The interfacial properties of extracts of Alphitonia excelsa, a native Australian plant rich in saponins, have been characterised to assess their ...

Developmental constraint of insect audition

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology, 2006
Background Insect ears contain very different numbers of sensory cells, from only one sensory cell in some moths to thousands of sensory cells, e.g. in cicadas.

Experiments with lake phytoplankton in large enclosures [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
The use of large plastic enclosures, or 'Lund tubes', in lakes as a semi-natural basin for experiments, approximating to lakes within lakes, is discussed.
