The materno-fetal interface in llama (Lama guanicoe glama) [PDF]

open access: yesPesquisa Veterinária Brasileira, 2007
Samples from 9 llamas (28 through 36 weeks of gestation) were collected and fixed in 4% buffered paraformaldehyde (light microscopy) and in 2.5% buffered glutaraldehyde (transmission and scanning electron microscopy). The material was processed in paraplast and slides (5mm) were stained with HE, PAS, Masson-Trichrome, acid phosphatase and Perl's.

Response of guanacos Lama guanicoe to changes in land management in Península Valdés, Argentine Patagonia: Conservation implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The guanaco Lama guanicoe was the only large native herbivore widely distributed across Patagonia until the introduction of domestic sheep Ovis aries. Guanacos have declined because of competition with sheep for forage, high hunting pressure and habitat ...

Cooperative vigilance: The guanaco's (Lama guanicoe) key antipredator mechanism

open access: yesBehavioural Processes, 2012
The concept of sociality has been associated with the effectiveness of antipredator mechanisms, like cooperative vigilance and the dilution effect. Lama guanicoe (guanaco) is a social native herbivore in South America and a social species. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the antipredator responses of different-sized groups of guanacos in ...

Estimating red deer Cervus elaphus population density using drones in a steep and rugged terrain

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Precise and accurate information about population density, crucial for wildlife management, is difficult to obtain for elusive species living in dense forests or steep and inaccessible terrain. Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), we developed a method for obtaining absolute population estimates of ungulates living in steep, rugged, and partly ...

Fog, Symbiosis, and Survival: The Ecological Architecture of the Grit Crust From the Atacama Desert Represents a Lichen Holobiome Rather Than a Soil Microbiome

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 6, June 2026.
Multi‐marker metabarcoding (16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, ITS2) of the fog‐dependent grit crust in the Atacama Desert reveals a community structured by lichen symbioses rather than typical soil‐derived microbial assemblages. The green algal photobiont Trebouxia dominates the eukaryotic community, accompanied by lichenized Caliciales and lichen‐associated ...

Contribution of privately protected areas to the conservation of a threatened woodland bird community

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Legally protecting areas of habitat is a common action for the conservation of threatened species and communities. However, protection on public land alone is inadequate to conserve many species and ecosystems. The inclusion of privately protected areas within the protected area network provides one mechanism to address this shortfall.
