In this paper, the yield and the land equivalent ratio (LER) of a silvo-arable agroforestry (SAF) system, containing one tree and one crop species, is analyzed analytically using a minimal mechanistic model describing the system dynamics. Light competition between tree and crop is considered using light extinction functions.

Abstract Sustainable intensification of agriculture is needed to meet higher future food demands while mitigating agriculture’s ecological footprint. Intercropping is a strategy for increasing agricultural productivity per unit land that is based on ecological mechanisms for improved resource capture.

Staple Land Equivalent Ratio for Assessing Yield Advantage from Intercropping
Experimental Agriculture, 1984SUMMARYThe Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) has been generally accepted as an agronomically sound index for assessing yield advantages derived from an intercropping practice. However, LER takes no account of the fact that, in subsistance agriculture, it is usually important to maintain a certain minimum percentage of the pure stand yield of the staple crop ...

Estimation of land equivalent ratios
Journal of Applied Statistics, 1989The estimation of the land equivalent ratios is proposed to be done by the (sum of) ratios of means of intercrop yield to sole crop yield. The bias and standard error of the estimates are obtained for large samples. Comparisons of the cropping systems have been made on the basis of these estimates and illustrated with field data.

Abstract Two experiments were each conducted for 2 years at Ibadan, Nigeria, to determine optimum component populations for intercropped maize ( Zea mays ) and cowpeas ( Vigna unguiculata ). Component populations of maize and cowpeas were varied independently.

Abstract Different planting pattern affects the leaf senescence of maize under intercropping systems, which regulate the grain yield of maize plants. In this study, we observed that a narrow-wide-row planting pattern in maize soybean relay intercropping system (MS) improved the leaf greenness and green leaf area, delayed the leaf senescence process ...
