Trophic Diversity in Duckweed: Mixotrophy, More Than the Sum of its Extremes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In the context of rising DOC in aquatic environments, mixotrophic duckweed may impact carbon cycling by acting as either a carbon sink, as they absorb CO2 through photosynthesis, or a carbon source, as they release CO2 through respiration of absorbed DOC, which depends on DOC concentration, light availability, temperature, and other environmental ...

A Folded, Structure‐Integrated Bimodal Sensor Enabling Non‐Contact and Tactile Perception for Intelligent Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A foldable bimodal sensor integrates a triboelectric nanogenerator and graphene piezoresistive effect into a monolithic laser‐induced graphene film. It enables synchronous non‐contact and tactile perception, achieving a distance of 110 mm, a sensitivity of 11.2 kPa−1, and a response time of 10 ms.

Muddying the waters of the landing obligation: how Multi-level governance structures can obscure policy implementation

open access: yes, 2018
The 2013 reform of the European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) included an increased drive for regionalisation of the policy implementation and the introduction of the Landing Obligation (LO).

Discovery and Engineering of a Rat Endogenous Retrovirus Reverse Transcriptase for Efficient Prime Editing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We screened 558 reverse transcriptases and engineered an optimized rat endogenous retrovirus‐derived variant, enRERV‐RT, via structure‐guided engineering and deep mutational scanning. This enhanced prime editor, based on the engineered RT, outperforms conventional M‐MLV‐RT systems across plant and animal cells, particularly at hard‐to‐edit loci ...

Regulatory control of adaptive fisheries: Reflections on the implementation of the landing obligation in the EU common fisheries policy

open access: yes, 2019
The most recently revised CFP Regulation, adopted in 2013, includes a number of significant changes with the aim to make fisheries more in tune with concept of the ecosystem approach and to avoid unsustainable exploitation of marine biological resources,

Epidermal METTL1‐Mediated m7G Modification Drives Psoriatic Inflammation by Stabilizing Bdkrb1 and Orchestrating Neutrophil Recruitment

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study unveils an unrecognized pro‐inflammatory epitranscriptomic checkpoint in psoriasis. By installing m7G modifications on the 5′ UTR of Bdkrb1 mRNA, METTL1 enhances receptor stability to orchestrate keratinocyte‐driven neutrophil recruitment via p38 MAPK signaling.

Research for PECH Committee - Options of handling choke species in the view of the EU Landing Obligation – The Baltic plaice example. Study

open access: yes, 2015
Under current fishing patterns, the Landing Obligation may result in plaice choking some Baltic Sea cod and mixed demersal fisheries. We propose a structured approach (decision tree) to identify solutions to the apparent problems, demonstrating how this ...

Tandem Duplication‐Driven Neofunctionalization of UDP‐Glycosyltransferases Shapes the Diversification of Triterpenoid Saponins in the Cucurbitaceae

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We present a chromosome‐level genome assembly of Siraitia grosvenorii and, through comparative genomics, uncover a conserved UGT73 tandem array driving triterpenoid saponin diversification in Cucurbitaceae. Crystalized SgUGT73AM30 further reveals the regioselectivity mechanism underlying its catalytic activity.

Possible Uses of Genetic Methods in Fisheries Under the EU Landing Obligation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
While genetics has assisted fisheries management for over 50 years, genetic applications aiming to alleviate or eliminate discards have received little attention. In this chapter, we focus on how genetics can be applied under the EU Landing Obligation, to identify and prevent unwanted catches and to estimate the composition of products made from such ...
