The Relationship Between Urban 2-D/3-D Landscape Pattern and Nighttime Light Intensity

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2022
As spatial and socioeconomic processes are the two key aspects of urban development, revealing the relationship between these two key aspects is critical.

Complementary network-based approaches for exploring genetic structure and functional connectivity in two vulnerable, endemic ground squirrels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The persistence of small populations is influenced by genetic structure and functional connectivity. We used two network-based approaches to understand the persistence of the northern Idaho ground squirrel (Urocitellus brunneus) and the southern Idaho ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Effects of topography and surface roughness in analyses of landscape structure - A proposal to modify the existing set of landscape metrics

open access: yesLandscape Online, 2008
Topography and relief variability play a key role in ecosystem functioning and structuring. However, the most commonly used concept to relate pattern to process in landscape ecology, the so-called patch-corridor-matrix model, perceives the landscape as a

Abiotic controls on macroscale variations of humid tropical forest height [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Spatial variation of tropical forest tree height is a key indicator of ecological processes associated with forest growth and carbon dynamics. Here we examine the macroscale variations of tree height of humid tropical forests across three continents and ...

How to visualize landscape metrics for local landscapes?

open access: yes, 2022
In the past, I wrote a post on how to calculate landscape-level metrics for local landscapes. There, I showed how to divide the categorical input map into a number of smaller areas and calculate selected landscape metrics for each area.

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

Data on the Land Cover Transition, Subsequent Landscape Degradation, and Improvement in Semi-Arid Rainfed Agricultural Land in North–West Tunisia

open access: yesData
Understanding past landscape changes is crucial to promote agroecological landscape transitions. This study analyzes past land cover changes (LCCs) alongside subsequent degradation and improvements in the study area.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...
