Theory of chiral defects in Langmuir monolayers
Physical Review E, 1995Thin films often exhibit a spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. This symmetry breaking can occur on two distinct length scales. On a microscopic scale, nonchiral molecules can pack in a chiral structure. On a macroscopic scale, a striped texture can buckle to form a spiral.

The Surface Potential of Langmuir Monolayers Revisited
Langmuir, 1997The surface potential characterization of Langmuir monolayers of simple, aliphatic compounds is revisited. Analogously to what has already been observed for fatty acids, the monolayer surface potential for esters and alcohols is close to zero at very large areas per molecule and only starts to increase at a given critical area.

Dangling OD Confined in a Langmuir Monolayer
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2007Novel structural features of water confined in lipid Langmuir monolayers are revealed. Using vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy at the air/D2O/monolayer interface, dangling OD bonds were investigated. Upon increasing the monolayer surface coverage, the dangling OD stretching mode showed a marked frequency red-shift as well as spectral ...

Splay stripe textures in Langmuir monolayers
The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1993Figure la is an image of the stripe texture in a monolayer of PDA obtained with polarized fluorescence microscopy. The probe was NBD-hexadecylamine at a concentration of 1%; details of the experimental technique are given in ref 6. Stripes related to modulations in the monolayer density have been observed in monolayers13 by fluorescence microscopy with

Micromanipulation of Langmuir-Monolayers with Optical Tweezers
The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2000A technique for the manipulation of Langmuir-monolayers at the air/water interface is presented. Optical tweezers are combined with fluorescence and Brewster angle microscopy to produce a system capable of mechanical and thermal handling of monolayers on a micrometer scale. The viscoelastic, electrical, and thermodynamic properties of the monolayer can

Polyoxometalate Monolayers in Langmuir–Blodgett Films
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2005AbstractLangmuir and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of a variety of polyoxometalates of different shapes, sizes, and charges were prepared by taking advantage of the adsorption properties of these polyanions on a positively charged monolayer of an organic surfactant spread on water. Three different aspects were investigated.

Thermodynamics of the liquid states of Langmuir monolayers
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2005The liquid states and the liquid-liquid equilibrium of surfactant molecules forming an interphase between air and water have been considered using Monte Carlo computer simulations. Specifically, the expanded and compressed liquid phases observed for surfactant molecules were characterized as a function of pressure and temperature.

Sequential Collapse Transitions in a Langmuir Monolayer
Langmuir, 2004Unusual sequential collapse transitions are investigated in a lignoceric acid Langmuir monolayer. The nucleation of monolayer collapse is first initiated in the solid, S, phase but at remarkably low surface pressure where small three-dimensional (3D) granular dots appear.

Cholesterol is an important component of lipid rafts in mammalian cell membranes. Studies of phospholipid monolayers containing cholesterol provide insight into the role of cholesterol in regulating the properties of animal cells, raft stability, and organization.
