Surface chemistry of lipid raft and amyloid Aβ (1-40) Langmuir monolayer

open access: yesColloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces, 2011
[Display omitted] ► Surface chemistry and in situ spectroscopy of lipid raft and Aβ (1-40) Langmuir monolayer were studied. ► It was revealed that the lipid raft Langmuir monolayer was unstable at the air–water interface. ► Adsorption of Aβ (1-40) on the

Phase transition in Langmuir monolayers

Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects, 2001
Abstract The main features of several theoretical models which describe the main phase transition and correspondingly the non-horizontal shape of the Π-A isotherms of the Langmuir monolayers, are discussed. New equations of state are based on the generalised Volmer's equation and consider the coexistence monomers and large clusters as bimodal ...

From Langmuir Monolayers to Multilayer Films

Langmuir, 2016
This feature article is intended to describe a route from Langmuir monolayers as the most suitable and well-defined models to polyelectrolyte multilayers. The latter are structurally controlled not with angstrom but with nanometer precision; however, they are very modular with regard to building blocks and function and are robust, therefore promising ...

Buckling of Langmuir Monolayers

Europhysics Letters (EPL), 1989
We show that under compression on a Langmuir trough, a surfactant monolayer may have a mechanical instability similar to the buckling instability of a beam or a plate. In the buckled state, the wavelength of the surface undulations is the capillary length resulting from the balance between gravity and curvature energy and is in the range of 104 A.

Photosystem I in Langmuir–Blodgett and Langmuir–Schaefer Monolayers

Langmuir, 2012
Photosystem I (PSI) is a membrane protein complex that generates photoinduced electrons and transfers them across the thylakoid membrane during photosynthesis. The PSI complex, separated from spinach leaves, was spread onto the air-water interface as a monolayer and transferred onto a gold electrode surface that was precoated with a self-assembled ...

Langmuir and Langmuir−Blodgett Monolayers of Molecular Tweezers and Clips

Langmuir, 2007
Molecular clips and tweezers are able to selectively bind electron-deficient aromatic and aliphatic substrates. By means of pressure-area isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), the self-association process and phase behavior of dimethylene-bridged molecular clips and tetramethylene-bridged molecular tweezers each substituted with two acetoxy ...

Molecular recognition at Langmuir monolayers

Current Opinion in Chemical Biology, 2006
In the field of chemical biology, molecular recognition has served as a basic concept to understand the construction of biological assemblies and the biological functions. Among the model systems available to investigate 'lock and key' interactions, the interfacial molecular recognition at the air-water interface is an appropriate system because it ...

Collapse Mechanisms of Langmuir Monolayers

Annual Review of Physical Chemistry, 2008
When a two-dimensional (2D) film is compressed to its stability limit, it explores the third dimension via collapse. Understanding this 2D-to-3D transition is of great importance as it provides insight into the origin of defects in thin films. This review draws attention to a reversible folding collapse first discovered in model lung surfactant ...

Structure of langmuir monolayers of substituted phthalocyanines

Materials Science and Engineering: C, 1998
Langmuir floating layers of two phthalocyanine derivatives, ytterbium bisphthalocyanine and tetra-tert-butyl nickel phthalocyanine, were investigated by means of compression isotherms, surface potential kinetics and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) in order to study the influence of peripheral substituents on the structure and stability of these films ...

From Langmuir monolayers to nanocapsules

Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects, 2000
Abstract This report intends to draw a line from the controlled preparation and understanding of Langmuir monolayers to the fabrication of hollow capsules with exciting perspectives for basic science and applications. It is shown that methods used to characterize structure and transport properties of Langmuir and Langmuir–Blodgett films could be used
