Very-large-mode-area, single-mode multicore fiber
Optics Letters, 2009A single-mode evanescently coupled multicore fiber consisting of 19 hexagonally arranged cores is investigated. Theoretical and experimental results are presented and compared to an equivalent hypothetical step-index fiber. A fundamental mode with an effective area of 465 microm(2) and a beam propagation factor M(2) of 1.02 was measured, showing the ...

Numerical analysis of large mode area segmented cladding fibers
2013 22nd Wireless and Optical Communication Conference, 2013We analyze numerically the dependence of segmented cladding fibers (SCF) characters, including the effective V-number, the effective fundamental mode area and the permissible bending radius of fundamental mode, on the structure parameters of the fiber and the signal wavelength with the methods of radial effective index and transmission matrix.

Broadband and large mode-area on-chip amplifier
2023Here, we present work towards a thulium-doped on-chip ultrafast amplifier, leveraging large mode-area gain waveguides with tailored group-velocity dispersion. We demonstrate 10 dB net gain for a broadband signal at 1820 nm inside a 5 cm-long waveguide.

Characterization of Modal Coupling of Bragg Gratings in Large-Mode-Area Fibers
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2011A new measurement technique for characterizing the magnitude of power coupling from the fundamental mode to higher order core- and cladding-bounded modes occurring in a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in a large-mode-area (LMA) fiber is demonstrated and studied.

Design and Applications of Large Mode Area Optical Fibers
Frontiers in Optics 2008/Laser Science XXIV/Plasmonics and Metamaterials/Optical Fabrication and Testing, 2008Large-mode-area fibers are an essential element for peak power scaling in fiber lasers. We will focus on recent development of leakage channel fibers and demonstration of single-mode operation in cores up to 170µm.

Large mode area fibre designs for micromachining applications
SPIE Proceedings, 2010High power, high-energy, rare-earth-doped fiber laser sources are now considered a suitable option for a number of applications in Medicine, Telecom, LIDAR and industrial applications. Regarding the generation of high-energy pulses, there is a compromise between gain volume and M2 value or beam parameter product for the generation of pulses with ...

Measuring the Modal Content of Large-Mode-Area Fibers
IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, 2009Spatially and spectrally resolved imaging of mode content in fibers, or more simply, S2 imaging, is a new measurement technique for analyzing the mode content of large-mode-area (LMA) fibers. It works by spatially resolving the spectral interference that occurs when light in a few-mode fibers scatters into different modes that then propagate with ...

Parasitic Modes in Large Mode Area Microstructured Fibers
OFC/NFOEC 2007 - 2007 Conference on Optical Fiber Communication and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference, 2007We present experimental evidence for parasitic modes guided by both bandgap and low density of state effects in large mode area silica microstructured fibers and explore ways of minimizing their presence via the fiber geometry.

Efficient bending compensation of large mode area fiber
SPIE Proceedings, 2014While much research has been developed to achieve very large mode areas (LMA) fibers, many difficulties arise, such as bending losses, mode deformation, and high order modes suppression. The main obstacle which remains difficult to confront in LMA fibers is bending distortion.
