Adiabatic bend transitions for large mode area fibres
Optics Communications, 2010Adiabatic bend transitions in large mode area multimode fibres were investigated theoretically using the beam propagation method. Adiabatic bend transducers preserve the power of guided light in the fundamental mode while guiding from one level of curvature to another for improved operation of mode filters and fibre amplifiers.

On the Raman threshold of passive large mode area fibers
SPIE Proceedings, 2011The output power of fiber optic laser systems has been exponentially increasing in the last years. However, non-linear effects, and in particular stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), are threatening to seriously limit the development pace in the near future.

Intuitive modeling of bend distortion in large-mode-area fibers
Optics Letters, 2007Bend distortion is emerging as an important consideration in the design of amplifier fibers with a large mode area, in addition to bend loss and mode-coupling effects. Simple, intuitive estimates of distortion sensitivity are presented for two interesting classes of fibers, in agreement with full numerical simulations.

Measuring bend losses in large-mode-area fibers
SPIE Proceedings, 2015We investigate the measurement of bend losses in few-mode large-mode-area (LMA) fibers. The influence of the light source spectral characteristics, modal power content and cladding light on the measurement accuracy and precision is studied experimentally. Monte-Carlo simulations are performed to understand the distribution of the variations. This study

Large Mode Area Guidance in a Simple Fiber Structure
CLEO: 2015, 2015We demonstrate higher-order-mode (A eff ∼1800μm2) propagation in a 100-μm-OD pure-silica fiber with a low-index polymer jacket commonly used for fiber-laser pump-guidance. This simple structure obviates the need for complex designs deemed necessary for realizing large-mode-area fibers.

The design of large-mode-area single-mode fiber
SPIE Proceedings, 2008Based on the frustrated total internal reflection theory, a leaky large-mode-area double clad fiber is designed. The propagation constants and leakage loss of the fundamental mode LP 01 and sub-low order mode LP 11 is investigated by using of the matrix method. Results show that the designed fiber can operate with single-mode.

Polarizing very-large-mode-area bragg fiber
2011 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe and 12th European Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO EUROPE/EQEC), 2011Single-mode larger-mode-area (LMA) all-glass (free of air-holes) fibers are required for all-fiber high-power lasers and amplifiers as they allow for efficient splicing with other components, which is impossible in the case of LMA photonic crystal fiber. Recently, we have demonstrated an active all-glass Bragg fiber with a mode-field diameter of 26 µm (

Bend distortion in large mode area fiber amplifiers
OECC/ACOFT 2008 - Joint Conference of the Opto-Electronics and Communications Conference and the Australian Conference on Optical Fibre Technology, 2008As ever larger mode area fibers are designed and incorporated into high-power amplifiers, bend-induced mode distortion becomes an important limitation. In any reasonable coiled-fiber arrangement, bend distortion can reduce mode area, gain interaction, and suppression of higher-order modes.

Large mode area fibres for high power lasers [PDF]
Fibre lasers are rapidly becoming increasingly attractive as high power versatile sources. We report here the development of large mode area erbium doped fibres. These fibres were then incorporated into simple laser cavities resulting in record pulse energy levels.
