Large mode area fibers with asymmetric bend compensation

open access: yesOptics Express, 2011
Fibers with asymmetrical bend compensation offer to completely remove the tradeoff between mode area and single-modedness, with potentially huge impact on high-power amplification. These fibers would be difficult to fabricate, but are the only fundamental-mode strategy that can remove the bend-distortion limitations on mode-area scaling.

Area spectra of the rotating BTZ black hole from quasinormal modes

open access: yes, 2010
Following Bekenstein's suggestion that the horizon area of a black hole should be quantized, the discrete spectrum of the horizon area has been investigated in various ways.

Mode-adaptive control of a kilowatt-level large-mode-area fiber laser based on 5×1 photonic lantern

open access: yesHigh Power Laser Science and Engineering
This study presents high-power mode-selective operation in a large-mode-area (LMA) fiber laser. A spatial mode-adaptive control system incorporating a 5×1 photonic lantern was employed to facilitate mode conversion between the LP01 and LP11 modes.

BFORE: The B-mode Foreground Experiment

open access: yes, 2015
The B-mode Foreground Experiment (BFORE) is a proposed NASA balloon project designed to make optimal use of the sub-orbital platform by concentrating on three dust foreground bands (270, 350, and 600 GHz) that complement ground-based cosmic microwave ...

An overview of solar flare results from COMPTEL [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
The COMPTEL experiment on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has been operating in orbit since April of 1991. During that time, COMPTEL has observed several large flares, the most notable of which were several X‐class flares which took place in ...

Stress-Induced Polarization-Maintaining Large-Mode-Area Photonic Crystal Fibers With Deviation of the Single-Mode Transmission Band and Delocalization of Higher-Order Modes

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal
The nonlinear effects and laser-induced optical and thermal damage in optical fibers, together with the limitations of beam quality and mode-field area, restrict the power scaling-up of single-mode output for developing high-power fiber lasers in the ...
