Interpretation of large-scale spiral structure [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1970
The present paper consists of three parts: (1) A general explanation, from a semi-empirical point of view, of the density wave theory and its ramifications, with only a few remarks on those detailed features which have not been stressed before; (2) a statement of our conclusions about the Milky Way System; and (3) a discussion of the problem of the ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Revisiting the angular size–redshift cosmological test with milliarcsecond radio structures in active galactic nuclei

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) measurements of the sizes of compact extragalactic radio sources, jetted active galactic nuclei, provide data for probing the angular size–redshift relation, offering a classical cosmological test ...

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

DESIGNING INTRINSICALLY SAFE FIBER-OPTIC SENSORS FOR MONITORING THE TECHNICAL CONDITION OF LARGE STRUCTURES

open access: yesНадежность и качество сложных систем
Background. Monitoring the technical condition of responsible and potentially dangerous large civil and special structures, such as nuclear power plants, pipelines, bridges, and many others, in order to determine their operability and safe operation, and

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...
