Mitigating the relativistic laser beam filamentation via an elliptical beam profile
It is shown that the filamentation instability of relativistically intense laser pulses in plasmas can be mitigated in the case where the laser beam has an elliptically distributed beam profile. A high-power elliptical Gaussian laser beam would break up into a regular filamentation pattern-in contrast to the randomly distributed filaments of a ...

Laser beam intensity profile transformation with a fabricated mirror
Applied Optics, 1997A nonaxisymmetric mirror is designed by the same method as a computer-generated hologram for laser beam intensity profile transformation and is fabricated by plasma chemical vaporization machining. We successfully transformed a circular Gaussian beam of a He-Ne laser into a rectangular uniform beam maintaining spatial coherence and using a ...

Influence of the beam profile formulation when modeling fiber-guided laser welding
During deep penetration laser welding, the focused laser beam determines the vapor capillary, called keyhole, and in turn the whole process physics. Beside spot diameter and Rayleigh length, the beam profile is another important but hardly explored part ...

Influence of laser beam profile on the selective laser melting process of AlSi10Mg
Selective laser melting (SLM) offers great potential to manufacture customized and complex metallic parts. Major drawbacks that limit its industrial application are the high cost of the process that is related to low process speeds and issues with ...

Laser beam shaping profiles and propagation
Applied Optics, 2006We consider four families of functions--the super-Gaussian, flattened Gaussian, Fermi-Dirac, and super-Lorentzian--that have been used to describe flattened irradiance profiles. We determine the shape and width parameters of the different distributions, when each flattened profile has the same radius and slope of the irradiance at its half-height point,

Smartphone laser beam spatial profiler
Optics Letters, 2015A simple, low-cost, portable, smartphone-based laser beam profiler for characterizing laser beam profiles is reported. The beam profiler utilizes a phosphor silica glass plate to convert UV light into visible (green) light that can be directly imaged onto an existing smartphone CMOS chip and analyzed using a customized app.
