Reduction of optical phase noise in semiconductor lasers
There are several applications of highly coherent semiconductor lasers, especially in coherent optical-fibre communications systems and optical-fibre sensors. Optical phase noise is extremely important in these applications. Here we report preliminary results from a simple technique whereby phase noise in semiconductor lasers may be reduced.

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

High-order modulations are currently widely used in optical communications to increase the data rate. However, due to the existence of laser phase noise, the performance of high-order modulated systems will be greatly degraded.

Noise Characteristics of semiconductor Laser with Phase- Conjugate Feedback [PDF]
Noise spectra of semiconductor laser subject to a phase-conjugate feedback were investigated theoretically. Time-delayed rate equations with feedback were solved and characteristic equations for relative intensity noise and frequency noise spectra were ...

Noise and aliases in off-axis and phase-shifting holography [PDF]
We have compared the respective efficiencies of off-axis and phase-shifting holography in terms of noise and aliases removal. The comparison is made by analyzing holograms of an USAF target backlit with laser illumination, recorded with a charge-coupled ...

Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Driven geometric phase gates with trapped ions
We describe a hybrid laser–microwave scheme to implement two-qubit geometric phase gates in crystals of trapped ions. The proposed gates can attain errors below the fault-tolerance threshold in the presence of thermal, dephasing, laser-phase and ...

A Demonstration of LISA Laser Communication
Over the past few years questions have been raised concerning the use of laser communications links between sciencecraft to transmit phase information crucial to the reduction of laser frequency noise in the LISA science measurement.

The Impact of Dispersion on Amplitude and Frequency Noise in a Yb-fiber Laser Comb [PDF]
We describe a Yb-fiber based laser comb, with a focus on the relationship between net-cavity dispersion and the frequency noise on the comb. While tuning the net cavity dispersion from anomalous to normal, we measure the amplitude noise (RIN), offset ...
