Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Photonic crystals as functional mirrors for semiconductor lasers

open access: yes, 2008
In recent years, interest has grown in the research fields of semiconductor lasers and photonic crystals. This thesis looks at integrating photonic crystals into existing semiconductor laser technology to act as functional laser mirrors.

Bifurcations of global reinjection orbits near a saddle-node Hopf bifurcation

open access: yes, 2006
The saddle-node Hopf bifurcation (SNH) is a generic codimension-two bifurcation of equilibria of vector fields in dimension at least three. It has been identified as an organizing centre in numerous vector field models arising in applications.

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Alumina: Effects of Scanning Strategies on External and Internal Defects

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates how scanning strategies affect pure alumina in laser powder bed fusion. Linear 45° scanning yields uniform surfaces but high porosity, while the island‐concentric strategy provides higher density with through‐holes favorable for infiltration. Findings highlight pathways toward optimizing defect‐free alumina parts.

Single-shot observation of optical rogue waves in integrable turbulence using time microscopy

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
A rogue wave is an unexpected oscillation of large amplitude and is an example of the spontaneous formation of a coherent structure out of disorder. Here, the authors develop an experimental strategy that can provide snapshots in time and thus record the

External cavity diode lasers and non-linear optical frequency conversion in spectroscopic applications

open access: yes, 2006
Semiconductor diode lasers are successful tools in atomic spectroscopy. They are routinely used in frequency conversion applications to develop devices that access regions of the spectrum not directly available.

Double-clad structures and proximity coupling for diode-bar-pumped planar waveguide lasers

open access: yes, 2000
We report, for the first time, fabrication of double-clad planar waveguide structures and their use for multiwatt, diode-bar-pumped, planar waveguide lasers based on Nd3+ and Yb3+-doped YAG.

Carboxylic‐Acid Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube‐Alkane‐Based Resistive Temperature Sensor for Cold Chain Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a reversible temperature sensor with high switching ratio, ∼103. The device is fabricated using PET‐ITO and carbon nanotube dispersions in alkane. Considering its application in cold chain logistics, a proof‐of‐concept with LED is showcased. Thus, a temperature drop below the threshold temperature (crystallization temperature of the
