Late Quaternary glacial phases in the Iberian Peninsula

open access: yesEarth-Science Reviews, 2019
The only glaciers existing today in the Iberian Peninsula are small features located in the Pyrenees, though their number and extension has undergone significant changes over the Late Quaternary. The wide range of glacial landforms and deposits distributed across different Iberian ranges suggests the occurrence of several past periods with larger ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Geomorphology of the Kaikoura area

open access: yes, 1968
The major physiographic units in the Kaikoura area are the Peninsula Block, Beach Ridges and Raised Beaches, Hard Rock Areas and the Alluvial Fans. Erosion of the Seaward Kaikoura Mountains and the transfer of the debris to the sea by fan streams have ...

A comparison of climate simulations for the last glacial maximum with three different versions of the ECHAM model and implications for summer-green tree refugia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This is an open access article. The official link can be found below.Model simulations of the last glacial maximum (21 ± 2 ka) with the ECHAM3 T42 atmosphere-only, ECHAM5-MPIOM T31 atmosphere-ocean coupled and ECHAM5 T106 atmosphere-only models are ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

An examination of the Geochemical properties of late devensian glacigenic sediments in Eastern England [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Onshore advance of the North Sea lobe of the Late Devensian British Ice Sheet the last glaciation resulted in the deposition of thick multiple till sequences along the coasts of east Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

The Causes and Implications of Microstructures in Glacial Sediments [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
This thesis examines how microstructures in glaciogenic sediments reflect the processes forming them, and how these microstructures then affect the conditions around them, through a series of field studies, laboratory tests, models, and statistical ...

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Changes in fire regimes since the last glacial maximum: an assessment based on a global synthesis and analysis of charcoal data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Fire activity has varied globally and continuously since the last glacial maximum (LGM) in response to long-term changes in global climate and shorter-term regional changes in climate, vegetation, and human land use.
