Lateral Distortional Buckling of Monosymmetric Beams under Point Load

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1996
Based on a new expression for the work done due to buckling, a computationally efficient method is presented for the lateral distortional buckling of monosymmetric beams. The method requires a knowledge of the stress distribution in the beam. For a simply supported monosymmetric beam subjected to a concentrated vertical load, a simplified stress ...

ELASTIC LATERAL AND RESTRAINED DISTORTIONAL BUCKLING OF DOUBLY SYMMETRIC I-BEAMS

International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, 2010
Based on the energy principle, a theoretical study of the elastic lateral distortional buckling (LDB) and restrained distortional buckling (RDB) of I-beams is presented. First, because the existing potential energy expressions for LDB are not suitable for members under a transverse distributed load, a new general potential energy expression of I-beams ...

Local, Distortional, and Lateral Buckling of I-Beams

Journal of the Structural Division, 1978
The finite strip method is used to study the local, distortional, and flexural-torsional modes of buckling of I-beams bent about their major axis. The interaction between these modes is investigated. The buckling loads so determined are compared with those derived using the simpler but approximate theories normally used to design against specific ...

Influence of the distortional-lateral buckling mode on the interactive buckling of short channels

Thin-Walled Structures, 2016
Abstract The present paper deals with an influence of the distortional-lateral buckling mode on the interactive buckling of thin-walled short channels with imperfections subjected to the bending moment when the shear lag phenomenon and distortional deformations are taken into account. A plate model (2D) is adopted for the channel section.

Inelastic lateral-distortional buckling of continuously restrained continuous beams

Steel and Composite Structures, 2005
The inelastic buckling behaviour of continuously restrained two and three-span continuous beams subjected to concentrated loads and uniformly distributed loads are studied in this paper. The restraint type considered in this paper is fully restrained against translation and elastic twist applied at the top flange.

Numerical assessment of lateral distortional buckling in steel-concrete composite beams

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 2020
Abstract Steel-concrete composite beams, when requested by negative moment, can fail due to Lateral Distortional Buckling (LDB), local buckling, or by the combination of these stability modes. LDB is a mode of stability in which the web must distort in order for the compression flange to displace and twist during buckling.

Influence of Web Distortions on Inelastic Lateral Buckling Length

2021
A critical failure mode is encountered in double symmetric steel I-beams, which is known as lateral distortional buckling (LDB), when the web slenderness ratio of the section is relatively high. LDB is a buckling mode arising through the interaction of the wellknown lateral torsion buckling (LTB) and web buckling, i.e. local buckling (LB), modes.

Lateral–distortional buckling of I-beams and the extrapolation techniques

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 2008
Abstract Various extrapolation techniques are utilized for predicting the critical buckling load of structural members undergoing lateral buckling. For the application of these methods it is only necessary to have data relating load to a deformation characteristic.

Lateral distortional buckling of monosymmetric I-beams under distributed vertical load

Thin-Walled Structures, 1996
Abstract An energy method is developed for analyzing the lateral buckling behaviour of beams subjected to distributed vertical load, with full allowance for distortion of the web. The paper presents a simple method which uses nonlinear elastic theory to obtain the external work due to buckling, and which obtains a new formulation of total potential ...

Lateral torsional and distortional buckling of channel- and hat-sections

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 1994
Abstract For thin-walled sections, lateral and lateral-torsional buckling are often affected by distortion of the section and this can severely reduce the critical stress. A calculation method for the critical stress which takes account of distortional effects, based on Generalised Beam Theory (GBT), is presented in this paper.
