Interplay Between Lithium Intercalation and Plating During Fast‐Charging of Lithium‐Ion Batteries Investigated by Operando NMR Spectroscopy

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, Accepted Article.
During fast charging, metallic lithium can form on the negative graphite electrode, compromising both cycle life and safety. After deposition, plated lithium can re‐intercalate within graphite, be disconnected or chemically oxidized. To better understand these reactions and their kinetics, operando measurements on cells with electrochemical ...

Predicting Goal-directed Attention Control Using Inverse-Reinforcement Learning [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Understanding how goal states control behavior is a question ripe for interrogation by new methods from machine learning. These methods require large and labeled datasets to train models. To annotate a large-scale image dataset with observed search fixations, we collected 16,184 fixations from people searching for either microwaves or clocks in a ...

Comparison of transvaginal or transumbilical tissue extraction at laparoscopic gynecologic surgery: A 12‐year experience

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gynecology &Obstetrics, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective To present our surgical outcomes by comparing the transumbilical and transvaginal methods for the removal of specimens in laparoscopic surgery of fibroids and adnexal masses during our 12 years of experience. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted at our referral center between January 2012 and April 2024.

Probability of fixation of an advantageous mutant in a viral quasispecies [PDF]

open access: yesGenetics 163:457-466, 2003, 2002
The probability that an advantageous mutant rises to fixation in a viral quasispecies is investigated in the framework of multi-type branching processes. Whether fixation is possible depends on the overall growth rate of the quasispecies that will form if invasion is successful, rather than on the individual fitness of the invading mutant.

Age Estimation From Blood Test Results Using a Random Forest Model

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
From the perspective of preventive medicine, it is essential to clarify the relationship between medical examination data and aging and health problems. We successfully and accurately estimated age from clinical examination data using a random forest model. Postmenopausal women tended to have higher age estimates than premenopausal women.

Guiding human gaze with convolutional neural networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
The eye fixation patterns of human observers are a fundamental indicator of the aspects of an image to which humans attend. Thus, manipulating fixation patterns to guide human attention is an exciting challenge in digital image processing. Here, we present a new model for manipulating images to change the distribution of human fixations in a controlled
