Leaf senescence in rice due to magnesium deficiency-mediated defect in transpiration rate before sugar accumulation and chlorosis

Physiologia Plantarum, 2012
Magnesium (Mg) is an essential macronutrient supporting various functions, including photosynthesis. However, the specific physiological responses to Mg deficiency remain elusive. In this study, 2-week-old rice seedlings (Oryza sativa. cv. Nipponbare) with three expanded leaves (L2-L4) were transferred to Mg-free nutrient solution for 8 days.

Growth rate, senescence and photosynthesis of ryegrass swards cut to maintain a range of values for leaf area index

Grass and Forage Science, 1984
AbstractAn experiment was carried out in which simulated swards of ryegrass (cv. S23) were grown in boxes. In the first instance the swards were cut at weekly intervals to maintain five levels of leaf area index (LAI) from LAI 1 to 4–5 in simulation of continuous grazing.

Nitrogen rate and plant density effects on yield and late-season leaf senescence of cotton raised on a saline field

Field Crops Research, 2012
Abstract Plant density and nitrogen fertilization are two important practices for field-grown cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of plant density and N fertilization rate, especially their interactions, on yield, yield components, late-season leaf senescence and Cry1Ac expression in Bt (Bacillus

LOGISTIC MODELS FOR ESTIMATING EPIDEMIC INCREASE RATES OF BLUEBERRY FOLIAR DISEASES, BASED ON METEOROLOGICAL AND LEAF SENESCENCE VARIABLES

Acta Horticulturae, 2012
Alternaria tenuissima is one of the most important pathogens on blueberry (Vaccinium corymbossum) in Argentina, causing leaf spots, twig blight and fruit rot. The severity of leaf spots caused by A. tenuissima was estimated in crops located in San Pedro, Gualeguaychu and Concordia (Argentina), during spring and summer of 2008 and 2009.

Repression of AtCLH1 expression results in a decrease in the ratio of chlorophyll a/b but doesnot affect the rate of chlorophyll degradation during leaf senescence.

Zhi wu sheng li yu fen zi sheng wu xue xue bao = Journal of plant physiology and molecular biology, 2009
To explore the possible regulatory role of chlorophyllase (Chlase) in chlorophyll (Chl) degradation during leaf senescence, RNAi Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants were constructed to repress the expressions of AtCLH1 and/or AtCLH2. Transcript levels of AtCLH1 and/or AtCLH2 were dramatically lowered and Chlase activity was correspondingly ...

Effect of Nitrogen Supply on the Growth and Senescence of Leaves of Lolium perenne with Contrasting Rates of Leaf Respiration

Annals of Botany, 1992
Respiration rates remain high during senescence which is an energy demanding process. Different rates of senescence may explain the contrasting respiration rates of mature leaves of two populations of perennial ryegrass cv. S23. This hypothesis was tested by measuring the lengths of elongating and senescing leaves of plants of two populations (GL72, a ...

Effects of strobilurin fungicide programmes and fertilizer nitrogen rates on winter wheat: severity ofSeptoria tritici, leaf senescence and yield

The Journal of Agricultural Science, 2011
SUMMARYFour field experiments were conducted over 3 years to study whether adding a strobilurin fungicide to a triazole fungicide programme for disease control in winter wheat had any influence, in combination with different rates of fertilizer nitrogen (N), on the severity of foliar diseases, the degree of leaf senescence and consequently on yield ...

Elevated atmospheric [CO2] from a natural soda spring affects the initial mineralization rates of naturally senesced C3 and C4 leaf litter

Soil Biology and Biochemistry, 2000
Naturally senesced leaves from the grasses Holcus lanatus (Yorkshire fog; C3 photosynthetic pathway) and Pennisetum clandestirum (Kikuyu; C4 photosynthetic pathway), grown in elevated atmospheric [CO2] surrounding a natural soda spring, were decomposed within respiratory chambers and the initial mineralization (0‐30 days) of the litter measured ...

Rate and duration of grain filling in relation to flag leaf senescence and grain yield in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) exposed to different concentrations of ozone

Physiologia Plantarum, 2000
Effects of different concentrations of ozone on grain filling, flag leaf senescence and final grain yield in field‐grown spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Dragon) were studied using open‐top chambers. The hypothesis tested was that an ozone‐induced reduction in grain yield is mainly related to an enhanced senescence and a shortening of the grain ...

[Effects of nitrogen application rate and post-anthesis soil moisture content on the flag leaf senescence and kernel weight of wheat].

Ying yong sheng tai xue bao = The journal of applied ecology, 2009
A rain-proof pool culture experiment was conducted to study the effects of nitrogen (N) application rate and post-anthesis soil moisture content on the flag leaf senescence and kernel weight of wheat. The results indicated that in all N fertilization treatments, the flag leaf SPAD value, soluble protein content, SOD and CAT activities, and ...
