Photonic-plasmonic mode coupling in nanopillar Ge-on-Si PIN photodiodes

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Incorporating group IV photonic nanostructures within active top-illuminated photonic devices often requires light-transmissive contact schemes. In this context, plasmonic nanoapertures in metallic films can not only be realized using CMOS compatible ...

Quasi-guided modes resulting from the band folding effect in a photonic crystal slab for enhanced interactions of matters with free-space radiations

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, 2023
We elucidate that guided modes supported by a regular photonic crystal slab structure composed of a square lattice of air holes in a silicon slab will transition into quasi-guided (leaky) modes when the radius of every second column of air holes is ...

Leaky modes of solid dielectric spheres

open access: yesPhysical Review A, 2017
19 pages, 9 figures, 24 equations, 28 references, one Appendix. (There exists some overlap with the corresponding conference paper, "Leaky Modes of Dielectric Cavities," by M. Mansuripur, M. Kolesik, and P. Jakobsen, Proceedings of SPIE 9931, 99310B~1:20 (2016); also available at arXiv:1610.00045.)

Backside emission leaky-mode modulators

open access: yesOptics Express, 2017
We report on an advancement to leaky-mode modulators that allows for backside emission from the device. This is accomplished by adding a high spatial frequency surface relief grating (~300 nm period) to the backside of the modulator. The outcome being a theoretical arbitrary increase in usable output aperture, at the cost of angular deflection.

Resonant absorption in semiconductor nanowires and nanowire arrays: Relating leaky waveguide modes to Bloch photonic crystal modes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We present a unified framework for resonant absorption in periodic arrays of high index semiconductor nanowires that combines a leaky waveguide theory perspective and that of photonic crystals supporting Bloch modes, as array density transitions from ...

Analysis of Leaky Modes in Photonic Crystal Fibers Using the Surface Integral Equation Method

open access: yesCrystals, 2018
A fully vectorial algorithm based on the surface integral equation method for the modelling of leaky modes in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) by solely solving the complex propagation constants of characteristic equations is presented.

On the interplay of waveguide modes and leaky modes in corrugated OLEDs

open access: yesOptics Express, 2011
Bragg gratings incorporated into organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) establish a coupling between waveguide modes and useful light (leaky modes). Here we demonstrate that the net coupling direction depends on the OLED stack design. We fabricated two different device structures with gold Bragg gratings.

Leaky mode integrated optical fibre refractometer [PDF]

open access: yesOptics Express, 2018
A route to monitor external refractive indices greater than the core index of the waveguide is presented. Initial application utilizes an integrated optical fibre (IOF) platform due to its potential for use in harsh environment sensing. IOF is fabricated using a bespoke flame hydrolysis deposition process to fuse an optical fibre to a planar substrate ...

Two-dimensional photonic crystals increasing vertical light emission from Si nanocrystal-rich thin layers

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, 2018
We have fabricated two-dimensional photonic crystals (PhCs) on the surface of Si nanocrystal-rich SiO2 layers with the goal to maximize the photoluminescence extraction efficiency in the normal direction.

Advances in the research of seismic-wave leaky modes

open access: yes地球与行星物理论评
When seismic waves propagate in layered structures, dispersion phenomena occur. Based on the characteristics of dispersion curves, underground velocity structures can be estimated.
