Protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania are causative agents of leishmaniasis, a wide range of diseases affecting 12 million people worldwide. The species L. infantum and L. amazonensis are etiologic agents of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis, respectively.

The ability to differentiate reference strains of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, L. (L.) chagasi, Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and L. (V.) guyanensis was evaluated using the simple sequence repeat polymerase chain reaction (SSR-PCR) technique.

A PCR-RFLP based method was developed to diagnose and identify the Leishmania species causing American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in a panel of clinical samples obtained from an endemic region of Brazil. The comparison of the results obtained by PCR-RFLP and PCR-hybridization in the identification of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and L ...

A technique developed in Trypanosoma cruzi biochemical studies was successfully used to fractionate Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis promastigotes. Ultrastructural analyses revealed a membrane fraction (MF) associated to subpellicular microtubules, a ribosomal-rich microsomal fraction (MicF), and a flagellar fraction (FF) free of associated membrane.

The effect of a purified preparation of glycosphingolipids (GSLs) extracted from Leishmania (L.) amazonensis amastigotes on murine lymphocytes was investigated. GSLs inhibited both concanavalin A (Con A)- or lipopolysaccharide-induced [3H]thymidine uptake by normal and immunized BALB/c mouse lymph node cells. The effect of total GSLs was dose dependent.

We present the first report of a co-infection by Leishmania amazonensis and L. infantum/L. chagasi isolated in 1993 from a patient with diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis (DCL), living in the sub-Andean region of Bolivia. This is the third reported case of DCL in Bolivia, but the first one with isoenzymatic identification of the aetiological agents ...

Pentamidine-resistant clones of Leishmania donovani and L. amazonensis promastigotes were developed by increase of the drug pressure in the culture medium and characterized. The resistant clones could grow in 40 and 20 microM pentamidine as determined for L. donovani and L.

Trypanosoma cruzi P21 protein exacerbates Leishmania (L.) amazonensis infection
Experimental ParasitologyThe protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, affects millions of people worldwide. Current treatments rely on drugs effective only in the acute phase, making the search for new therapeutic targets a priority. While a recombinant protein based on T.

Leishmaniasis has become a significant public health issue in several countries in the world. New products have been identified to treat against the disease; however, toxicity and/or high cost is a limitation. The present work evaluated the antileishmanial activity of a new naphthoquinone derivate, Flau-A [2-(2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-6-deoxy-β-L ...

Pravastatin modulates macrophage functions of Leishmania (L.) amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice
Experimental Parasitology, 2013The control of leishmaniases poses an important challenge due to the scarcity and toxicity of the pharmacological options available. We have previously shown that pravastatin significantly improves the course of the disease in Leishmania (L.) amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice.
