The emergence of Leishmania major and Leishmania donovani in southern Turkey
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2014In southern Turkey, Leishmania tropica and L. infantum are both the causative agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL), respectively. However, L. major and L. donovani were known to exist after the influx of Syrian refugees.Between the years of July 2003 and July 2013, a total of 167 smears and 113 bone marrow samples were

Leishmania infantum and L. major in Algeria
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1996Since 1980, the development of leishmaniasis in Algeria has been marked by a considerable increase in the number of cases of both visceral leishmaniasis (1121 cases recorded) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (more than 2000 cases per year). New Leishmania infantum and L. major foci have appeared in the north and south of the country. During this period, 100

Leishmania major: Antileishmanial Activity of Methylbenzethonium Chloride
The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1986Methylbenzethonium chloride (MBCl) decreased the growth of Leishmania major promastigotes and amastigotes in vitro. This decrease occurred during 4 days of exposure to the drug at concentrations of 0.1 to 2.5 micrograms ml-1. MBCl at 2 micrograms ml-1 killed almost 100% of the free living promastigotes and 87% of amastigotes within 4 days of treatment.

Leishmania major: a compassionate parasite?
Trends in Parasitology, 2001Parasites live at the expense of their host. To ensure survival of the parasite genome, it is important that the host survives at least until successful transmission of the parasite. The level of tetrahydrobiopterin (H4B) in Leishmania major parasites plays a crucial role in the development of the insect stage of the parasite into the metacyclic ...

Leishmania mexicana and Leishmania tropica major: Adoptive transfer of immunity in mice
Experimental Parasitology, 1980Abstract The transfer of lymphocytes from NIH mice infected with Leishmania tropica major to nonimmune syngeneic mice, which had received 600 rad irradiation, markedly altered the course of subsequent Leishmania mexicana and L.t. major infections in these animals, when compared with infections in irradiated mice reconstituted with lymphocytes ...

The extracellular phosphorylation of exogenous substrates have been studied in two Leishmania isolates, L. mexicana and L. major, that differ in their capacity to transform from promastigotes to amastigote-like cells when submitted to heat shock condition.

The genus Leishmania includes many pathogenic species which are genetically very distant. The possibility of genetic exchange between different strains is still an important and debated question. Very few genetic hybrids (i.e., offspring of genetically dissimilar species) have been described in Leishmania.
