The phlebotomine sandflies in the northern areas of the state of Paraná, Brazil, particularly those in the '16a' health region, were investigated over a 3-year period. Using CDC light traps (with and without hamster bait) and Shannon traps (with lights and horse or human bait), 16 species were collected from seven municipal districts which were known ...

(Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) In the New World genus Leishmania parasites are etiological agents of neglected zoonoses known as leishmaniasis. Its epidemiology is very complex due to the participation of several species of sand fly vectors and mammalian hosts, and man is an accidental host.

Leishmaniasis is considered a neglected disease, which makes it an unattractive market for the pharmaceutical industry; hence, efforts in the search for biologically active substances are hampered by this lack of financial motivation. Thus, in the present study, we report the leishmanicidal activity and the possible mechanisms of action of compounds ...

SummaryThe immunopathogenic competences ofLeishmania (V.) braziliensisandL. (L.) amazonensiswere reviewed in the light of more recent features found in the clinical and immunopathological spectrum of American cutaneous leishmaniasis. It was shown a dichotomy in the interaction between theseLeishmaniaspecies and human T‐cell immune response; whileL. (V.)

A study of two isolates of Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis in the hindgut of experimentally infected Lutzomyia longipalpis was made with the light and electron microscopes. Infections were always heavier in the pylorus than the ileum, and no parasites were found in the rectum.

Abstract Background The drug of choice for leishmaniasis is pentavalent antimony and different regimens are under continuous evaluation. The ideal therapy should be simple, effective, and with no or minor side‐effects, in this paper we have studied the efficacy of intralesionally applied antimony in New World cutaneous leishmaniasis.

We conducted a quasi-experimental study to compare the response to meglumine antimoniate in patients with localized cutaneous leishmaniasis from two endemic areas of Brazil that were infected by two Leishmania species. Sixty-one were infected by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis (group B) and 57 by L. (V.) guyanensis (group G).

SummaryThe expression of Langerhans cell (LC) and dermal dendritic cell (dDC) as well as T CD4+ and CD8+ immune responses was evaluated in the skin of BALB/c mice experimentally infected by L. (L.) amazonensis (La) and L. (V.) braziliensis (Lb). At 4th and 8th weeks post infection (PI), skin biopsies were collected to determine the parasite load and ...
