Mucosal leishmaniasis due to Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis L(V)b in Três Braços, Bahia-Brazil [PDF]
Brazilian mucosal leshmaniasis is briefly reviewed, emphasis being given to recent advances clinical management. Patients continue to occupy much hospital bed space and in some cases are notoriously difficult to treat. Indefinite follow up is recommended.

We compared the in vitro growth of promastigotes from two Leishmania species in TC-100 and Schneider media. Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis replication rates were similar in both tissue culture media and reached maximum rates by 48 h.

Further Evidence of an Association between the Presence of Leishmania RNA Virus 1 and the Mucosal Manifestations in Tegumentary Leishmaniasis Patients. [PDF]
Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (TL) is endemic in Latin America, and Brazil contributes approximately 20 thousand cases per year. The pathogenesis of TL, however, is still not fully understood. Clinical manifestations vary from cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) to

Proteins selected in Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis by an immunoproteomic approach with potential serodiagnosis applications for tegumentary leishmaniasis [PDF]
The serodiagnosis of human tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) presents some problems, such as the low level of antileishmanial antibodies found in most of the patients, as well as the cross-reactivity in subjects infected by other trypanosomatids.

In a preliminary study in Juruti, a mining municipality in western Pará State, Brazil, 12 out of 21 patients suspected of presenting cutaneous leishmaniasis showed positive PCR (SSUrDNA and G6PD): Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis (9/12; 75%) and L. (V.)

Macromolecular biosynthetic parameters and metabolic profile in different life stages of Leishmania braziliensis: Amastigotes as a functionally less active stage. [PDF]
It was recently hypothesized that Leishmania amastigotes could constitute a semi-quiescent stage characterized by low replication and reduced metabolic activity.

Comparative study of parasitological techniques for demonstration of amastigotes and primary isolation of promastigotes in American Cutaneous leishmaniasis [PDF]
FUNDAMENTOS: O PCR tem alta sensibilidade no diagnóstico da LTA, mas é caro e distante da prática. A cultura e o esfregaço são práticos, mas pouco sensíveis.
