Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

Survey of Elderly Trauma Patients with Prolonged Emergency Department Stays

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gerontology, 2008
Background: This study was undertaken to determine the factors occurring in elderly trauma patients that cause emergency department (ED) physicians to spend much time evaluating them, thereby delaying their discharge or admission, and how misdiagnosis or

Autophagy in cancer and protein conformational disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Autophagy plays a crucial role in numerous biological processes, including protein and organelle quality control, development, immunity, and metabolism. Hence, dysregulation or mutations in autophagy‐related genes have been implicated in a wide range of human diseases.

Reducing length of hospital stay with colchicine

open access: yesThe Journal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2022
Introduction: Colchicine is an ancient agent with well-known anti-inflammatory effects and commonly used in treatment of hyperinflammatory conditions. It has been argued that colchicine could be an appropriate treatment option in COVID-19 to control hyperinflammatory response.

A stepwise emergence of evolution in the RNA world

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How did biological evolution emerge from chemical reactions? This perspective proposes a gradual scenario of self‐organization among RNA molecules, where catalytic feedback on random mixtures plays the central role. Short oligomers cross‐ligate, and self‐assembly enables heritable variations. An event of template‐externalization marks the transition to

Evaluating the Duration of Hospitalization and Its Related Factors Among Stroke Patients

open access: yesCaspian Journal of Neurological Sciences, 2018
Background: Prolong hospitalization after a stroke is associated with increased cost, higher risk of complications, and adverse effects.  Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the length of stay and its related factors among stroke ...

Composite Length of Stay, An Outcome Measure of Postoperative and Readmission Length of Stays in Pancreatoduodenectomy

open access: yesJournal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, 2020
Postoperative length of stay (PLOS) and readmission rate are pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) outcome measures, which are reported individually but may be interrelated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how well a composite length of stay measure (CLOS) that included PLOS and readmission length of stay describes outcomes.

The thioredoxin‐like and one glutaredoxin domain are required to rescue the iron‐starvation phenotype of HeLa GLRX3 knock out cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Glutaredoxin (Grx) 3 proteins contain a thioredoxin domain and one to three class II Grx domains. These proteins play a crucial role in iron homeostasis in eukaryotic cells. In human Grx3, at least one of the two Grx domains, together with the thioredoxin domain, is essential for its function in iron metabolism.

Duration of Hospitalization in Association with Type of Inhalation Therapy Used in the Management of Children with Nonsevere, Acute Bronchiolitis

open access: yesPediatrics and Neonatology, 2016
Acute bronchiolitis is one of the main respiratory emergencies in young children. Although supportive therapy is recommended, substantial inconsistency in the clinical usage of inhaled treatments has been reported.
