Epidemiology and prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis)

Veterinary Parasitology, 2013
Hares are important game species in Europe and their meat is consumed by humans. Toxoplasmosis is an important cause of mortality in hares in Nordic countries but little is known of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis). Sera from 298 Iberian hares from Navarra (North Spain) were assayed for antibodies against T. gondii by

New Genetic Variation in European Hares, Lepus granatensis and L. europaeus

Biochemical Genetics, 2000
Six genetic polymorphisms for the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) and four for the brown hare (L. europaeus) are newly described. The genetic variation of peptidases B (PEPB) and C (PEPC), hemoglobin alpha chain (HBA), hemopexin (HPX), vitamin D binding protein (GC), and properdin factor B (BF) was assessed by conventional electrophoresis and ...

First cases of myxomatosis in Iberian hares ( Lepus granatensis ) in Portugal

Veterinary Record Case Reports, 2020
Myxomatosis was detected in Iberian hares ( Lepus granatensis ) in Portugal, October 2018, following its emergence in Spain 3 months earlier. Here, we describe the epidemiological, molecular and anatomo‐histopathological data of the first two cases.

Ancient introgression of Lepus timidus mtDNA into L. granatensis and L. europaeus in the Iberian Peninsula

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2003
A 587 bp fragment of cytochrome b sequences from 90 individuals of 15 hare (Lepus) species and two outgroups were phylogenetically analysed and compared to an analysis derived from 474 bp sequences of the nuclear transferrin gene. Mountain hare (Lepus timidus) type mtDNA was observed in L. granatensis and L.

Monitoring of emerging myxoma virus epidemics in Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) in Spain, 2018–2020

Transboundary and Emerging Diseases, 2020
Myxomatosis is an infectious disease caused by the myxoma virus (MYXV), which has very high mortality rates in European wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). While sporadic cases of myxomatosis have also been reported in some hare species, these lagomorphs are considered to have a low susceptibility to MYXV infection.

The genetic distinctiveness of the three Iberian hare species: Lepus europaeus, L. granatensis, and L. castroviejoi

Mammalian Biology, 2006
Morphologic variability and allozyme polymorphisms previously indicated that three different hare species coexist in the Iberian peninsula, Lepus europaeus, L. granatensis, and L. castroviejoi. Here, we show evidence of clear nuclear differentiation and distinctiveness among the three Iberian hare populations, applying 6 microsatellite loci to 100 hare
