The significance of atypical mononuclear leukocytes

Summary Atypical mononuclear leukocytes in routine peripheral blood smears from 20 children have been studied and the clinical features of the cases reviewed. There seems reason to believe that these atypical cells are lymphocytes in the process of maturing to histiocytes or monocytes.

Platelet aggregation inhibition by mononuclear leukocytes

In this study we have investigated the effect of human mononuclear leukocytes (ML) on platelet aggregation. The results obtained demonstrated that coincubation of platelets with nonstimulated ML decreased platelet aggregation induced by collagen or thrombin in a concentration-dependent manner.

In-vitro studies of chemotaxis of mononuclear leukocytes (MNLs) were performed to characterize humoral mediators governing the accumulation of these cells at inflammatory sites. Two humoral factors that attract MNLs in vitro were found. The first was a heat-labile factor (mol wt, 90,000) present in untreated guinea-pig serum and plasma.
